I use Explorer - last year for 2 weeks (with all my pre-existing conditions) in Spain for me and my OH it was £88, this year, one week for me, same pre-existing conditions its £68! As soon as I hit 60 premiums went up but they certainly cover all my conditions and see very friendly when I've queried anything (not had to claim but just checking something on the policy). I'd recommend them too.
  • Anyone know of a provider that offers a family policy where the kids can travel alone (with school)?

MSE FAQ says this is usual but all the ones they recommend don't offer this and state the kids must travel with you.

Try the Post Office as I think they used to do it, but I belive they have recently changed their underwriter.

We are a family of 2 adults and 4 children off to Egypt. I'm bamboozled by all the different quotes I getting so could really do with some advice as to which companies are reputable. Don't want to skimp on cover but don't want to pay any more than is necessary either. Thanks in advance for any help you can give :j

Lynds, see my link above - there are some companies to avoid in there - but if you don't - Stay away from policies from companies outside the UK, you have no protedtion from the FOS. To find out if they are foreign look at the policy documents and usually on the last page (or near) it will say the underwriters name and address (sometimes phrased like "insurance provided/supplied by .......).

What do you mean by this? I have booked insurance for Christmas, but the underwriters are a very large Swedish insurance co, who won insurer of the year.

Do you mean they won't pay out, or that if they went bust, you wouldn't be able to recoup any money? If everything is declared and accepted what is the difference?

I'm really struggling to find travel insurance for my Granddad and wondered if you lovely people could give me some help.

My parents want to take him to Spain for a week as a treat but at 87 and with prostate cancer its proving a little difficult! So far i haven't found a single company willing to cover him.....

He's ridiculously well for a man of his age, we have been debating whether to risk him going purely with the EHC1 card or if this would be a huge mistake?

    Any thoughts?

I am a little "out of practice" with the EHC1 (as it is only valid in Europe) but when I was have dealt with it in the past it only covered Emergency Room/Casualty Dept. visits. i.e. If you get admitted to hospital, or medical repatriation, those are not covered. This may have changed but it is wise to look into it.

Anyway see here - some great tips and advice from Cancer Research.

No Rusty, just because the company is Swedish that's not what I meant. Aviva (was Norwich Union) are Dutch I beleive but in this case I mean that looking at the policy, if every address is outside the UK (underwriters and brokers) then stay away. AXA (Ireland) Ltd is one that sold policies to UK residents and they denied payment on EVERY case I had with them, the same for another company that was based in Gibraltar, this is the trouble with the internet, it makes it "one World market".

Not saying they don't cover, but in the event of a dispute, the FOS have no authority outside of the UK.

Unless you say who your insurers are I cannot be certain, but this is a guide only.
