Have just been told by insurefor.com that gadgets bought on Ebay will not be covered on travel insurance, wow!
  • What sort of gadgets and do they say why? Seems a bit odd, I suppose if they're second hand they could say something but lots of big shops have Ebay Shops now. Sounds strange to me.

I am attempting to get travel insurance for a 3 month trip to Tunisia. The insurance thus falls under backpacker insurance. Unfortunately this section of Martin's otherwise excellent guide is a bit underdeveloped and I'm having real trouble finding an affordable policy that is actually worth paying for (all the companies that Money Supermarket throws up have terrible reviews). Does anyone have any recommendations in this area?

I should add that it is a work-based trip, which is ruling out a lot of policies (for instance, Direct Line's says the trip must be primarily for 'pleasure' - something I am sure they will use to worm their way out of any claim). It is not manual work.
they get mixed reviews, but i've just got insurance for my 14yo who's going on holiday with family friends through essential travel. i believe they do backpackers insurance as well and are reasonably priced (they even came up with a decent quote for my in-law's upcoming trip to the states, the insurance for which was threatening to break the bank ;) )
  • What exactly does it mean to be resident in the UK?

If I have spent more than six months in the last year outside the UK, but do have a house, bank account and so on here, does that count as resident here?

I'm really struggling to find travel insurance for my Granddad and wondered if you lovely people could give me some help.

My parents want to take him to Spain for a week as a treat but at 87 and with prostate cancer its proving a little difficult! So far i haven't found a single company willing to cover him.....

He's ridiculously well for a man of his age, we have been debating whether to risk him going purely with the EHC1 card or if this would be a huge mistake?

    Any thoughts?

It would be a huge mistake for your grandad to travel with just the EHIC card, although important that he takes it with him in his wallet. Try All Clear Travel for insurance, they compare pre-existing condition insurance companies. I am travelling with several pre-existing conditions with Explorer through them and they have lots of others and you only fill the forms in the once.

You may have to pay a bit for it but if his prostate cancer is not too advanced and causing him problems you may find a reasonable insurer who will cover him. If he was to be taken ill and you don't have insurance the cost of treatment in a private hospital (you can't guarantee he will be taken to a public hospital), repatriation if necessary and the cost of someone staying with him if he needs to stay after the rest of the family have gone home would be horrendous. Don't risk it, buy the insurance.

Have you tried Age Concern? My mum is 81 and has previous history of breast cancer ( many years ago) but still has to declare...and pay a fortune I may add for her travel insurance. Think she has used The Post Office as well if Im not mistaken. Good luck...

  • Can anyone recommend a travel insurance provider that I can get cover for a holiday booked for summer 2015. The couple of insurers I've looked at online don't offer cover that far ahead yet. However as it is already booked I was under the impression it was best to get cover as soon as possible. Can anyone advise? Thanks WTP

Perhaps it is because it would be fairly easy to 'manufacture' a high value for an item by listing an item you already own (or getting an accomplice to do so), then clicking to buy it. Then accidentally losing it on holiday. I guess you could even fake the purchase of an item you never owned, then claim to have lost it on holiday.
