My partner who is 40 had a heart attack at 36 but other than that is a healthy marathon running guy. I have just attempted to renew his medical special travel insurance, only to be told the law has changed and that they can only supply annual travel insurance to the family (me and the kids are on my policy). They refused to accept that he doesn't often travel with us (he works broad a lot and we are at home :( )

My query is is this correct. Does the law now state they have to insure the family or not at all? And if we already have cover that's just too bad?

That does sound like a load of old hogwash. So far as I am aware there have been no changes in the law affecting whom an insurer can insure within a family group.

It would be completely unworkable anyway - how would you define 'family', for a start?

It sounds far more like an insurer's attempt to broaden its risk by including what I assume to be normal risks along with your partner's (presumably) higher risk.

Not much you can do about it (except complain), though - insurers can make their own decisions on whom to insure, or not to insure. You may need to find another insurer for your partner, unless you can persuade the present insurer (perhaps at a higher level) that what you've been told is nonsense.
  • I've looked at all the advice and sites till I'm boss eyed can anyone tell me is there a company which provides travel insurance for holidays within the UK. I am going to the Shetland Isles for a couple of weeks in October so I am within the UK and don't need medical cover or repat cover nor the various conditions about other covers after you leave the UK. What I do need is cover for the cost of my travel to and from the Shetlands by ferry (with car) and accommodation costs. Only about £1000 all in but a sizeable chunk for an OAP to lose if things go wrong.

You say you won't need medical cover but what if you fall ill before the holiday and have to cancel it? Can't help with your query but I expect someone will be along who can answer.

Try one of these, as recommended by Which? for people aged 65-69 - all apparently include UK holidays:

    Covered2Go Gold
    AnnualTravelInsurance.com Super
    GreatCover.com Super
    Holidaysafe Club 65
    Tesco Bank Standard

There will be others that include the UK, but it's a question of checking all the policies. A trip to the library to read the full Which? report might also help you. :)

    Hi all,

I am 31 years old and have planned quite a couple of trips
the next 6 months. My destinations include: barbados, marrakesh,
faro, poland and iceland. Probably it makes sense to get an annual
insurance cover. Could anyone recommend me a good one for
the areas above? Does barbados count as a north american travel
Destination? Maybe anyone knows of current promotions that
Offer health cover, i.e., i know HSBC plus had once this offer

    Thanks for your help

The question usually is, "Worldwide inc/exc the USA and Canada".

As Barbados is not in the US you could get Worldwide exc USA and Canada.

Most policies will cover those destinations. However there is no one size fits all and you will have to do the donkey work and read the policies to ensure they provide the cover that you require.

Remember to check the amount of excess, whether baggage is included, etc as some of the cheap policies have very high excesses and no baggage.

Just a little niggle, I guess?

My Travel ins runs from April, and I normally book around Dec/Ja. The holidays, main ones are in the summer. So, if I book in Dec and am covered by Company A, then change in April to Company B.

Say in May, something happens and I have to cancel. Am I covered, and by which company?

    Thanks in advance.

If something happens in May then you are covered by the new insurer unless it relates to something that happened before the new insurance took effect.

Example, if you visited the doctor in March and didn't get a diagnosis until May, that may be a grey area.

    hi,
i had my leg broken at the hospital in june last year, the external fixator was removed 5 weeks ago and i am slowly getting back to normal.
i still need to see my surgeon again in sept for a last check of the site.
everything went too plan but both the fibula and tibia were broken then manipulated to straighten the leg.
we travel to turkey mid july for 2 weeks.
ive tried a couple of links from here to insurers and the cheapest im getting is about £160 for the 3 of us, 2 adults and one child 10 years old.
this seems a lot is there anywhere specific to try, should i just get an individual policy for me and a separate one for my wife and child.
obviously im not going to be doing any sports or rock climbing etc etc
just looking for some advice really.
    thanks.

  • ... are terrible but it would be rotten to have travel insurance and not be covered. Who gives good cover for these? (I'm going to US, on a single-trip).

    Thanks
