I've receive one of these letters today, doesn't mention owning money just to contact them immediately. I've never had a CJ against me and never owed money, ok I owe loads on my cards! but have never defaulted on any debts. After reading this thread I think I'll just stick the letter in the bin.

cheers

MH are a bunch of cowboys. They buy up statute barred debts (no acknowledgement or payment for 6 years or more) for next to nothing, then try to scare people into paying up debts which are no longer actionable through the courts. In other words, they chance their arm. Ignore them. If you get court papers, that's different. Most of the time, though, MH can't take you to court. They can only harass and threaten, but their threats are nothing more than hot air. You can actually get them done if they keep harassing you, by the way.

Do a search on here for other MH threads. There's a link posted in one of the newer ones about harassment and reporting MH to the Office of Fair Trading.

Hi

I have received in the post a letter form a company called Mackenzie Hall. They say they are trying to contact me concerning a 'personal matter'. The letter is on photocopied headed paper and a printed signature. So far I have not contacted them and have no intention of doing so until they contact me with a specific request.

I have done google searches and found they are a debt collection service specialising in old or unrecoverable debts. I did have a CCJ from approx 96/97. I knew about this from a credit report done in 97. However no-one has ever contacted me to sayI owe them money, am in debt, are chasing debt etc etc.

I have 2 questions as follows:

1) Has anyone else come across Mackenzie Hall and what were their experiences?

2) Where do I stand, legally, with having to pay CCJ?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi There,

I have come across them, twice now in fact. The first time was last year, when they sent me a letter claiming that I owed Boxclever about £250 from an agreement in the mid 1990s. I thought about this and knew that I'd taken out an agreement in my final year of University, but I was never in arrears and had actually bought the TV and Video player that I'd previously been renting at the end of the agreement. Following my initial thoughts, I decided to challenge them and sent a letter to them asking for more detail and ending with words to the effect of "If you think you can prove it, I'd be more than happy to see you in court." I provided them with my contact details, but I heard nothing more. A few months later, I moved house.

Here comes the good bit. I have just received another letter today (11/07/07) at my new address, well over a year since I received the last letter, and despite replying asking them for more detail on their original claim. Again it is addressed to me at the top of the page, but then states lower down (presented in the third person) that they are 'attempting to contact' me 'regarding a personal matter.' Further to this, it asks that if I am not the person that they are looking for but have information on the 'subject', that I should ring the number quoted or send an email to goneaway@mackenziehall.co.uk. They have got to be kidding... Anyway, why would I have opened the letter in the first place if it wasn't addressed to me? Is this starting to sound funny? Finally, and perhaps most interestingly, I have just had my name added to the register of electors where I currently live. No-one at my previous address has my current contact details, so that is the only way that they could have found out my new address. I don't think my Victor Richards, (who didn't really sign the letter anyway) is as clever as he likes to think.

My advice would be to completely ignore the letter and contact watchdog about it. If you have paid any money (and this goes for anyone who has) you should definitely contact watchdog straight away. Whatever you do, don't pay them anything. The whole format of their letter was very suspicious, and watchdog seemed to know who I was talking about when I contacted them myself last year. The more people that contact watchdog about it, the more seriously they will take it and they might look into it in more detail.

A bit of an essay, I know, but it should give anyone who has had a similar problem a little more insight into what might really be going on here.

Tim

Tom contact watchdog, use the link I've pasted below:

I too received a letter from MH today from Victor Richards.....I thought it must be about money - 'personal matter' indeed! I am so glad I looked on here so thanks everyone. I am not totally sure what to do but for the moment I will ignore. I really can't think what it is I owe.....I was sure I cleared it all up when I went to CCCS 3 yrs ago. I certainly know that no-one has chased me up for debts since at least 1998 when I took a loan out and cleared it all. My CCCS stuff is since then (yes, messed up again) and all being paid so hopefully it is before then and they will give up!
Has anyone succesfully ignored them away?
Thanks guys!

Mornin all, guess what i got in the post this morning?? Yep, a letter from McConning Hall!! Says its a personal matter, like everyone elses.

All i can think of is an outstanding bill for 3 Network that i am still, after 2 years, trying to sort out.

I think this crowd play on the fact that you are intrigued by the letter and really really want to know what its about and once you phone, theyve got you!

My letter has gone in the bin too.

Mick.

My wife got a letter this morning from them.

Can I clarify something here?

People are talking about "Generally the Limitations Act 1980 would come into force after 6 years and they cant do anything unless you admit to the debt, but as you state there is a CCJ against you that might cause complications. However it may be that they wont be able to enforce judgement without the courts permission. You need to find out if there actually is a CCJ against you and you should be able to do that on here"

So does that mean if six years have passed and you do not have a CCJ and have not heard anything irrespective of whether or not you have moved addresses (three or four times) then as long as you do not admit liability of the debt then MH cannot touch you, send baliffs round, take you to court etc? The wife is sure its to do with her ex who pressured her into taking cards out etc. which was more than 6 years ago.

Any advice given - greatly appreciated.

Thanks
