Years ago when we moved to a house with a pond, I had the wonderful idea to put the goldfish from the tank into it....I put them in a smaller bowl and left them outside for a few hours so that the water temperature would stabilize a bit.....didn't want to tip them straight in and shock them...

Thing is I forgot about them and they got left in the bowl overnight....

DD1 discovered the empty bowl the next morning and asked where the fish had gone...I had to invent a story about how goldfish like to jump out of the bowl and flap their way down to the pond....If she knew the cat had got them she's have been mortified.

  • Buffy, fish tanks.
    I can't answer your problem because I'm a total numpty !

My late DH'S passion was this huge 4ft tropical tank that for the last two years I have been faithfully tending to, and the thing is I know nothing about them, apart from cleaning the filter. Friends tell me about tapsafe, water changes, gravel cleaning, ph levels and what not but all I do is clean the filter. I only keep them because the boys wanted me to (but they don't want to do the cleaning stuff).

I figure I must be doing something right, oldest fish is a kissing gourami who is nearly 8. However I have been cajoled into buying many fish in the last two years and many have perished. So I stick with a huge plec he's about 5 years old, clown loaches and gouramis and a few tetras (but they never last).

Feel free to impart many fish ramblings, I may well pick up a few pointers along the way.

  • Wow four foot DC. I would love a tank that big! I used to have clown loaches but they got too big and I have to give them away I was so sad! and a kissing gourami, my tanks are too small. My tetras never last either, but that is because my water is too hard for them.

To be honest I find the whole thing annoying, people seem to have fish and do all the wrong things i.e have loads of wrong fish/water/tank size and still their fish survive whereas I try to do the right thing and everyone ups fins and dies.

Happy - if I go to the shop I can get my water tested and they can advise me on how much RO water I need, can't do that over the phone and I shall have to get for a while till I can figure out what to do with the fish.

    best get on

    see you all later xxxx

  • Aren't clown loaches the best ?

I hope you can sort someway to keep some, I may rant and moan about them but secretly I do love them.

  • Ah I see buffy, I figured you meant just buying special water all in one for a tank not having to check your water and add accordingly to make it ok :-) all sounds complicated to me lol. I'm tired this evening bedtime soon. Hope everyone had a very nice evening :/) xx

  • Evening,

wellI spent hours yesterday researching fish tanks and working out what I can realistically have given the hard water and relatively small tank. All the tanks got cleaned and tidied up and I planned my tank stock oh about fifty times over!!

Then I made my 101 things to do in a 1000 days list which of course threw up lots of questions about my plans and my future. I have always been clear about my aims in life, trouble is work is getting in the way and "life" kinda stops during term time which is something I seriously have to tackle. Even typing about work is making me tense. I used to love my job I really did. I need to find that feeling again.

Any how needless to say that lead to me not sleeping untill about three and then sleeping in till 11.00 which really impacted on today - I went shopping (spent £15.04 in Sainsburys, £6.00 in M and S -gift for a friend and a drink) I walked about 9,000 steps and came home knackered!!

So predictably I had a nap, then had dinner and revised for my theory test.

Tonight - i.e now I am off to bed with Nytol and WILL GET UP EARLY TOMORROW!

    Night all

    xxxx
    Nevertheless she persisted.

Buffy my love, well done on the Bathroom:T

I am back in the zone with you from tomorrow, nothing much is going to be done today due to the mass teenage sleepover for DS2s 15th Birthday today.

I have a wardrobe that needs to be Ebayed on the landing which you have to squeeze past, its been there since Easter:o I really need to get my bot into gear!
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.
