I'm totally confused now, sorry to be a pain.

The memory you ordered is faster than you need, but the right kind. Crucial recommended to get a pair of 512MB modules to take advantage of the Dual Channel feature which should be faster (at least in theory). So the memory is not really wrong, but I would buy a pair of 512MB modules. You might be able to cancel the order before they ship it as you have the right to anyway according to the DSR.

Ok, I ordered the memory that Donnie suggested but I've now run the Crucial memory scan and this shows something different to order. Cost is slightly more but I'm not too worried about this. I just want to make sure I get the right one. I've ordered this:

1"ByteStor 1GB PC3200 DDR 400MHz DIMM Desktops" £30.99

but the Crucial scan says to order this:

Guaranteed-compatible memory upgrades for your eMachines D915GAG Motherboard
Part No: CT6464Z40B
Qty: 2
£18.49 ex. VAT
£21.73 inc. VAT* ea.

Total Price: £36.98 ex. VAT
£43.45 inc. VAT*

Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
Currently Installed Memory: 512MB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Total Memory Slots: 4
Dual Channel Support: Yes

CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntelCPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz Model 4, Stepping 1
CPU Speed: 3066 MHz

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

This is the link to the results page from my scan, showing 4 different possible memory thingys. Hope someone understands this because I'm lost! http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=CF20833331D926C3

I'm totally confused now, sorry to be a pain.

It's exactly the same memory, but Crucial is trying to sell you two(smaller capacity) 512MB modules at a higher price.
Two of the same in my link with be £29, instead of £43.45 with Crucial.

Plus with my suggestion you will have 1.5GB RAM for £30.99. With Crucial, you would only have 1 GB for £43.45.

Actuall I'm not quite sure why Crucial has made that recommendation, as they should know you already have one slot filled. One reason why I never buy from them.

So don't worry, you've done the right thing.

thanks, I clicked the link you gave me last night and ran it, and it got rid of some of my start-up programs that I don't use. Is that what you mean or do I still need to do something else?

No, I mean't post a fresh hijackthis log, if your commit charge is 900MB after a reboot before running anything else, there is about 800MB of bloat running, once you get the commit charge below 504MB, it will run much faster.

Please, this is nonsense. Don't embarrass yourself.

Available Memory Slots: 2
Total Memory Slots: 4
Dual Channel Support: Yes

Plus with my suggestion you will have 1.5GB RAM for £30.99. With Crucial, you would only have 1 GB for £43.45.

The motherboard has 4 slots in total and 2 free. So atm there is a pair of 256MB modules installed

Actuall I'm not quite sure why Crucial has made that recommendation, as they should know you already have one slot filled. One reason why I never buy from them.

The reason is dual channel which only works with pairs of memory modules.

Please, this is nonsense. Don't embarrass yourself.

Can you explain, please?

I would say the same about your other post and I explained, why you're wrong.

And how can you say it's exactly the same memory when one is PC2700 and one is PC3200?

Of course I can explain.

Here is a link to the picture of the Motherboard.

You will see that there are only two slots.

Here is a link to the components list of the eMachines E4028.

So, I'm not going to insist on who is correct, but you can see on what I have based my decision.
In addition, I take back my rather abrupt comment as you weren't likely to know of the less obvious evidence. :)

As to your other question...I don't see any PC 2700 listed. Can you show me where?

If this is really the motherboard, then you're right. I based all my comments on the links provided in this thread. http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=CF20833331D926C3 said that it is a different motherboard. And this motherboard has four memory slots with two used with 256MB each.

Again, if you click the link and add the two recommended modules to your basket, it says PC2700.

I tried to find the e4028 on the crucial website, but it wasn't listed. So the OP must have used the scan tool and identified the motherboard as "eMachines D915GAG Motherboard".

So I don't feel "embarrassed" at all. Everything I wrote is right for this motherboard.

I googled a little bit and found this link

http://dexplor.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7747553

Third post shows the motherboard with four memory slots. Your picture shows a motherboard with not fully populated memory slots. It is provisioned for two more memory slots and you can see it right next to each of the two slots.

I don't know on what level the crucial scanner works. If it reads directly from the PCI bus (and I think it does), then it might be right and the Gateway page wrong. How do you know anyway whether the PC is from Gateway? Are they the only ones who sell eMachine PCs? It wouldn't surprise me if eMachines have custumized configurations for different Resellers. You can buy for instance Hauppauge TV cards with the same model number but with different chipsets...

Maybe the OP can open the computer case and see whether there are two or four slots and whether there are one or two modules installed. If this is too complicated, then the safe option will be to buy the one 1GB module.
