I suspect this is part of your problem

commit charge = 994M is greater than RAM 504mb

Easy to resolve by cutting down the applications running at startup.

    ...or adding some memory.

That costs money, not a lot probably, but this is mse.

For the sake of completeness, this will give an idea of prices.

  • just got home from collecting daughter so have only had a brief read. Russ thanks for your idea, will have a look tomorrow when I can concentrate better.

I think I only have 3gb, but not sure where else to look, it was next to the info re ram etc.

I do have a lot of stuff running on start up, it takes ages to actually get going. Will have a look tomorrow and see what I need to do to get rid of some of it.

It seems I really don't need to spend so much on another pc so going to revise my budget and have a look round. I don't think we have Aldi round here but will see where the nearest one is.

Thanks for all your ideas and help. It would be good in the meantime if I could actually get this one going to a reasonable speed so I will definitely have a look at that. I've done a hijack this log before when I had a virus so will do that tomorrow too.

There is hope for me yet - thanks again :)

Download Ccleaner if you don't already have it - http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html
This has a very easy option in tools to disable or delete startup items and to restore items you disable.
    3GB h/drive??? You can get a 30/40/60B h/drive for £6/8/12 from cex delivered and 12 mths g/tee.
A free prog. like SIW will tell you all about your pc specs - http://majorgeeks.com/SIW_System_Info_d4387.html
Another 512 of ram should sort your pc.

Maybe you can let us know the make and model of the machine. 3GB seems unlikely. :)
  • Thanks for persevering with this. Ok after googling how to find the size of my hard drive I have finally managed to find out lol

My pc is made by emachines, model E4028 and I have 183Gb hard drive. It's about 5 years old.
    Used is 64.8Gb
    Free is 118Gb

ok so I have plenty of space but a machine that runs slower than a snail. I obviously need more memory which doesn't help.
I ran Ccleaner last night as I already have that on my pc, and I'm just about to run Malwarebytes scan.

I also ran the programme suggested last night, to cut out the number of programmes running at start-up.

Right off to do the next bit now, thanks. :)

    512 MB £14.50

    1 GB £30.99

Since you were willing to spend such a large amount on a new PC, you should go for the 1 GB module. :)

    1GB eBay £28
  • Thanks Donnie, ok next silly question if that's ok. I presume that is to buy some more memory? If so, if I buy some is it easy to fit and how will I know if I have room or not to put it in?

Are there different types of memory or can I just get any?

Still running scan by the way. It's taking ages.

No, you get the memory I suggested. It's as easy as falling off a log to slot the module in. You have a spare slot on the motherboard.

    Fit memory modules.

    Which scan?

The malwarebytes scan, just finished. It found a few minor things, but nothing to worry about so I just deleted them. I'm going to order some memory off the internet in a minute - really keen to get some and being female I'm impatient :)
