How bizarre. If I was standing 4 feet away from something I'd not be at all surprised if someone moved in front of me to get a closer look.

I was once in a supermarket and wanted to get something from an end-of-aisle display, but a woman had parked her trolley in front of it, so I just leant over (the trolley, not her - she was standing, talking to someone) and reached for what I was after, with a "sorry" just in case. To which I heard a bit of a huff from her, but dismissed it as being directed at someone else - couldn't believe someone would huff over that.

Imagine my surprise when it did turn out to be at me. Being a supermarket, we were going aisle to aisle and on a couple more aisles I happened to pass this woman, who immediately turned to the person with her and said, very loudly, "Ooh, we better get out of the way, we don't want to be IN THE WAY now do we?!". I was absolutely baffled - and on the second time turned to her and asked her, politely, if there was a problem. She ignored me and continued to repeat the above to her friend. At this point my OH intervened to stop me from talking to her further (I would only have apologised for upsetting her - and perhaps suggested that she not take personal offence so easily in future :P), and we made sure to avoid her the rest of the way.

Some people really do take things out of proportion.

If i saw someone obviously looking at the shelf, there is no way i would stand right there in front of them as if to say "look at my butt, its better"

Some people can't get the point of a post on these boards and take it out of proportion....

I have no problem with people being american but it does annoy me when people 'pretend' they are.

Trousers are now pants, trainers are sneakers, now im not a mum - im a mom i could go on

Mom has been used where I come from for years and years. Nothing to do with being an Americanism.

I agree with the 'mom' thing but there are some (strange) parts of the UK where Mom is in use as the vernacular for mother.

...and it's not "strange" either!!! Just realised this is a (very) old thread!

Where be that, gregg? One of the old posters claimed West Yorkshire but I never heard it when I lived there - I'd say Mam was the most common in all three ridings.
I need to think of something new here...

Main pain for me is when shopping for birthday cards and someone stands right next to you and reaches across you to pick cards up. 99% of the time they don't even take them, they just stuff them back in another place. Why can't they just wait for you to move?
