would that be competitive competitions, or non competitive, every one is a winner, noone is a loser, its the taking part that counts type competitions ;)

If my school shut for football I certainly won't be watching it!! I could get on with some report writing, planning, marking or assessment instead. Any of those options would be preferable to watching any game of football.

Did you have to I am purposefully avoiding thinking about or doing the million and one things I have to do as well as teach.

By the way you forgot IEP reviewing and writing, class assembly writing ready for ungrateful parents to watch ;) and two subjects to write action plans for.

We had a football tournament to celebrate the world cup first day too, it was surprising the children whose parents haven't brought them yp to be good sportsman when they lose.;)

In my day as a child of the 70's and 80's you went on holiday in school holiday periods or not at all-there was NO question of taking termtime holidays whatsoever. My parents ACTUALLY CARED ABOUT MY EDUCATION AND WANTED ME TO DO WELL AND WE TOOK OUR BREAKS IN SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. I agree with LEA's frowning on and punishing and prosecuting and jailing parents for taking them on holiday in termtime because if you do it regularly it sets a bad example to those kids for when they have kids of their own, they'll do the same thing and it spirals out of control.

Capital letters really make your point much clearer. :D

Reading the actual thread might help you understand the actual problem though. Were you sick for the 'comprehension' section of your education?
A bit harsh but quite funny!:D

I'm another who agrees with your philosophy Flossy. We shouldn't just follow rules slavishly, regardless of whether those rules are sensible or not.

My son is not unruly and ill-disciplined (taking into account his age) nor impolite (we are frequently complimented on his manners), despite being taken on term-time holidays 3 times in 6 years.

He is, however, bright and well educated, and able to question whether rules are sensible and useful. If they are not, then he will look at negotiating ways round them, managing the situation to meet his needs and requirements.

Which is how we should all live, surely.

look back to my earlier posting (#98), for my take on the matter.
Yay! Let's set up our own club or, I know, how about we start a 'free' school; under the new guidelines and do it 'our' way!:D
