Have a quiet word with your dentist if he's still doing it!
Ahhhh - I haven't been since March. Pitty, I thought it was a great idea!April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200 -

the funds have been RESERVED more like - not actually been taken. its better than you being able to withdraw the funds and then the S/O bouncing.0 -

more like they know the systems - the money reserved protected the customer - at the end of the day they had the money in another account anyway
this comment really does annoy me because if One works in a bank , it does not mean that they agree with everything a bank does - you just presume that they do. they are consumers too
if they don't want to pay by standing order they could always pay by cash
and i too, have my current account, my mini cash isa, my isa investor, my shares0 -

Great ideas and DoH policy rarely meet! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

No, as others have said, it is reserved so you don't spend it before they can take it - but if it's like most other banks, then you will still get interest until the day they ACTUALLY take it. If you don't - THEN kick up a fuss if it's really worth it.0 -
From memory, smile do this as well. I can see, to a certain degree, the point being made by the OP. The principle that you should be able to access your money at any time until the actual date the SO or DD is due, BUT, in this case, the bank has applied to remove/pay the money over a weekend and as such has reserved it to ensure that there is sufficient cash in the account on the day the payments were due to be met. It has effectively said "hang on, there are payments due on Monday, so lets put a hold on this cash as the account holder, if they withdraw it all, won't be able to ensure there are sufficient funds into the account and cleared by the due date" (simplistic, I know!)
That all said, it doesn't surprise me one bit about the Halifax. Useless. Almost as bad as cahoot :rolleyes:0 -
Lloyds TSB do this also. Their systems update at 10:30 each weekday evening (apart from a Friday) and 12noon on a Sunday.
So any direct debits / standing orders due on a Monday come out after 12noon on a Sunday. It is mentioned in the T&C's.
It works both ways though. Any money due to be paid on a Monday would also go in just after 12noon on a Sunday.
Personally, I don't have an issue with it.Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right!

Me neither. I did have my council tax taken a week early this month though, and it's paid by DD. Enough money in the account from the start of each month to cover the payment regardless of when it came out as I have an account for all DD's and SO's but it annoyed me nonetheless that they did it. Got a letter (unprompted) apologising profusely from the Chief Executive stating that a number of residents had been affected like this. At least they acknowledged it, and accidents do happen. Even offered to pay the bank charges (only what I'd expect though!)0

kenshaz wrote:Not a good response ,the banks make profits we are customers, they serve us ,they are giving us nothing free
i have no axe to grind, I do not work for a bank BUT for the last 20 or so years my bank has taken in my salary payments, paid all the bills I ask it to, printed and sent me new cheque books, always had someone available to help and advise me if I have a problem, kept little machines filled up with money so I need never run short. I have never had to pay them a single penny for any of this, so it seems to be free to me.0 -
It's not a simplistic response, but a statement of principle.kenshaz wrote:That is rather a simplistic response, have you any interests in banking?
I apply the same logic to banking, mobile phone companies, airlines, insurance, and any other type of company that people gripe about on here.
And yes, I have interests in banking - not least shareholdings in a couple of ex-building societies (gained when they demutualised) and, as previous posts have indicated, via my equity ISAs and pensions - but that applies to almost anyone, and applies to any corporate entity, not just banks.0
