Getting a dishwasher to make life easier?

My mother bought me a dishwasher when my 4 children were small. Years passed and eventually when the dishwasher was poorly I said 'Right, I won't bother with a new dishwasher! The children can wash and dry'.

    Big mistake!.

Got a new dishwasher and have had one ever since. Not the same one of course. Youngest child is now 40.

Best thing about a dishwasher is that it keeps the kitchen tidier. No odd coffee cups and snack plates waiting to be washed. In the days when I washed up myself, no sooner had I finished than more pots would appear. And of course there is no, or not much, washing up to be done by human hands.

It is said that a dishwasher is actually more economical with hot water than hand washing but I can't quote any statistics.
Anyway, I wouldn't be without one, given the choice.
  • It's no joking been the best purchase I've EVER made getting a dishwasher. There's only two of us and we could only fit in a slimline one but hell I'm not ever going back to washing stuff by hand. I get really annoyed when something won't fit in the dishwasher!! We paid around £50 for ours second hand. I can't praise them enough!!
It influences our choice when we go away (we usually go for a self-catering thing) and we won't stay anywhere that doesn't have one.

Life is far too short to be stood at a sink like a fool scrubbing stuff off plates, pots and cutlery just for it to get dirty again! Might as well get a machine to do the work I consider beneath me!

If there is any way of fitting in a full size one do, much better for pots & pans.

If you can stretch the budget to one with a cutlery drawer at the top rather than a basket do (Miele, Bosch & Seimens).

yet another dishwasher lover here. I've had one for the past 3 years and wouldn't do without one. It is a bit of a chore emptying it... but then it would be more of a chore actually washing up.

I've had full size and slimline and I'd go for the fullsize as I didn't need to put it on as much as the slimline I have now - which I use everyday, sometimes twice if I am doing a lot of cooking. I suppose it depends on available space though.

As with all appliances by the best you can AFFORD I would not advocate getting into debt.

    DO NOT BUY A SMEG!!

We had a hotpoint for 11 years untill it stating going wrong, just worn out.
Got a SMEG with 5 yr Warranty. bad news... OK for 2 years then plastic power button fell off so couldn't turn it on . thats all!!

But after Smeg Service have been at it .. nearly 12 weeks /5 visits . with no bits ,wrong bits, bit that don't fit, fittng bits that were not broke !! its now completely dead. pretty good ! eh!!:mad:
    Some service!!

Getting the machine replaced now , but after promising a new machine and new warranty, they are back tracking on the warranty and will only use the balance of the 5 yrs .?
They have said they are no interest in giving any compensation for the weeks of hassle and no dishwasher ?

    From their website
" With a prestigious brand you expect a quality After Sales Service. Smeg Service UK is committed to provide the customer with the highest level of service "
    you have been warned!!

    Rant mode off!! ;)

Stop press typically 3 minutes after this scribblin!! SMEG ring and give the full 5 years waranty on the new machine !!

But the Their Service and machines are still..crop with an A..

We inherited a dishwasher when we moved.

Went back to our flat after the two year secondment with no dishwasher.

Moved to a house and inherited dishwasher a second time.

It broke, no money to buy.

    Found one on freecycle.

Was without while extension was done.

    So far it's still working!

What I have learnt - also have four children

I wouldn't want to be without it but we can survive if we need to, but you better clear your extra curricular activities because it takes an awful lot of time up.

Value tablets are perfectly fine, I don't bother to rinse, just scrape.

Check your water for hardness as to whether you need salt and rinse aid - soft water you probably don't need it.

    The best routine is:

start with an empty dishwasher. *Children can put their own breakfast dishes in. Clear up kitchen from breakfast and lunch box making/dinner prep that goes on during breakfast time. No-one in the house here for lunch so I put the lunchbox stuff in after school. Clear up kitchen from dinner. We do wash up saucepans if no more room. Wait till last cups of tea been had. Put dishwasher on before going to bed.

DH unloads when he's having breakfast. Return to *

We only have a slimline one as there are only two of us but we couldn't live without it !! Cost approx £200 nearly 5 years ago and has saved loads of time and energy.

The plates etc come up really clean and we always say that it has been one of our best buys ! Take care over what tablets you use though as there are huge differences between them.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

I've had a slimline Bosch for around 10 years now and would not be without one. Strictly speaking this is my second, but only because stupid husband didn't think of cleaning the pipes. My MIL now uses my first Bosch and we have a replacement that wasn't needed.

We are a family of four and general everyday pots and pans will fit in one wash, Sunday lunches will need two loads...but if I could be bothered I would wash them by hand. I can live with them on the kitchen top for a couple of hours.:o

I couldn't live without one now. (Well, I could...but I wouldn't use any pans or do half as much cooking as I do:o)

Get one...it will transform your life!:D
