I tried with DS, but the midwife said I had to put him on the bottle. I have no intention of giving up this time. I really want to feed her myself and think it will be really good if I am able to manage it

Oobedoo, good luck, bf does not come easily to all of us - if you find it hard make sure you ask for help from midwife / bf counsellor. I found it got a lot better after the first week.
  • I agree, it took me 5 days to teach my son to latch on, it is not easy!
In the meantime the hospital gave him my mil in a little cup, not in a bottle, it worked great!

but maybe they do? they have high infant mortality rates in the thirld world too. I'm obviously not suggesting that those poor babes have just starved becausee they couldn't get the hang of breastfeeding, but I'm sure there are probably women there who it doesn't work for either. The difference is that they have no choice but to persevere.

I cried buckets when I couldn't manage to breastfeed, but I thank my lucky stars that at least I had the option of feeding her something else. Its not as good, and I feel guilty about that, but at least she is thriving.
  • loops in third world countries they do not have pain control for labour and one of the down sides to that is is makes the baby sleepy. Neither do they have a well meaning somebody on hand with a bottle just waiting for you to fail at the first hurdle. Of course they have deaths in childbirth as well so I am by no means a "Mother Nature knows best" freak. The way to suceed at breast feeding is to offer the baby the breast frequently AND NOT TO GIVE A BOTTLE JUST IN CASE. If the baby has a bottle s/he will not be hungry so will not suckle on you and you will not establish a milk supply.
  • Sorry hit the button too quick. It did used to be easier - nothing to do with nature but when they used to keep you in for a week or more you had nothing else to do but establish your milk supply. Now they send you home the same day and if you do not have someone near you to help and are perhaps feeding baby at 2 in the morning, getting up to a four year old who has wet the bed at 4.30 am and doing everything else those of us that have been there know about I wonder that anyone can feed now.
