I had a water birth this time around - well recommended - and the worrying thing was they had a kitchen sieve, just in case you accidentally did a poo when pushing:eek:.
As far as I know I didn't.....and I'm not asking too many direct questions either!
And I know where you're coming from, Sarahsaver, they gave me a gas and air cannister that was almost empty and didn't change it over quickly enough when it ran out. I didn't swear, but I did shout a bit....
I wasn't sick this time, but have been when in labour previously - I put it down to being induced.0 -
I was sick! I kept saying thank you to my mum, because she was rubbing my back while I was being sick and she has a sick phobia!! I kept on about it for ages because I was so amazed she hadn't run from the room.0

I think if this thread was circulated to teenage girls worldwide, we'd see an end to humanity within a generation_pale_.
Things I did not expect during pregnancy/labour/motherhood:- I had to really restrain myself from eating firelighters during pregnancy - they smelled sooooo very irresistible:eek:
- I started producing milk from about 18-20 weeks pregnant with all three of mine.
- My first labours started with my waters going - both times were meconium stained, but babies were fine. My third baby was a 'dry' birth - my waters had gone a week before but no-one realised, and I lost a half-stone during that week. Thankfully, baby was fine.
- All of my children were born with sacral dimples. As they had no neurological deficits, no investigations were needed, but all three were more than 1" above the anus, and had skin changes around the margins. It makes me very glad I was diligently taking folic acid supplements for the three months pre- and post-conception, especially as my mother had two stillborn babies, and I could never find out why they died (she died many years before I had my babies). I would love to see all women who are TTC taking Folic Acid supplements.
- Healthy babies are not pink and cute when they first arrive - my first words on seeing DD1 were 'It's purple':o.
- DD1 was a week old when I discovered I'd been putting her nappies on back to front:o. Didn't seem to do her any harm though.
- I could never tell my baby crying from another - any baby crying caused a 'let-down' reflex - my milk would start flowing.
- I rarely woke at night when my babies cried - I sleep like the dead - and it didn't change when I had babies. Everyone told me it would - they were wrong. As I breastfed all of them, it meant 9 times out of 10, my then-husband would have to wake me to go to them. Well, it meant he felt needed and involved, didn't it
:D.
- Labour pains were no problem, afterpains were a b*tch for babies 2 and especially 3.
- My expressed breast milk had lots of cream on top when it settled in a bottle - I presume that's normal, I just really didn't expect it!
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

The thing is there is so much info on birth and hopefully for most that is over relatively quickly.
What should be given more emphasis/column inches etc. is how much you have to change when a baby comes on the scene! We would have learnt this from our extended families in the past.
also 99% of the products aimed at mothers and babies are not necessary and will not make the slightest bit of difference.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I thought the pushing part was absolutely horrible, it truly felt like I was passing a bowling ball and I wondered whether I would ever get it out. The midwife kept saying I was doing really well and that they could see the head and that it would only be about 15 minutes.
I got so fed up with the whole pushing thing that I said to her 'just grab him by the ears and pull him out will you?' and she said if I could see his ears I would - I thought '!!!!!! what do you mean you can't see his ears' they are only half way down the head for God's sake :rotfl:
The pushing only took 40 mins but if felt like hours and I said to the midwife afterwards 'what was that with the 15 mins thing, it was much longer than that' and she replied that she didn't have the heart to tell me it was going to be longer - she was a student mind bless her.0 -

Same thing happened to meI felt like crying when she said they couldn't see the ears! After that, she told me to push and I kept saying no.

I had a sense of humour failure at the point when my son's head was crowning. I didn't want to push any more, it was so damned painful, and more worrying I knew there was no turning back as I couldn't see a way to carry on my life due to my son's head stopping my legs from closing...:o
I got so fed up with the midwife telling me to push when I felt ready that, rather than panting for the head, I gave an almighty push, shooting him out into the water in one go....thankfully, I got away with a 1st degree tear and no stitches. All in all my second stage was 18 minutes, so not too bad....0
