Hi everyone.
DPixie - it does take time to find your way around France, especially rural France. Here's a link to AVF http://www.avf.asso.fr/Website/site/eng_welcome_welcome1.php - it's set up to welcome those who have moved into an area and can help in all sorts of ways. They are usually run by ex-pats. Our local one had a special welcoming day and invited all those who had moved into the area (whether British or French) in the previous year. They will be able to tell you of all sorts of local activities, including French/English conversation evenings, and they can offer valuable advice on all sorts of things. Put your region of France into the search thingy to get you started.
Here's a link to Anglo Info http://france.angloinfo.com/ - a brilliant website for ex-pats with tons of local information, and a great forum. Again, you will need to click into the one for your region. I've asked loads of questions on my local one, and have always had lots of replies.
Here's another one for ex-pats - http://www.totalfrance.com/
I don't know what heating you have there at the moment but, for extra back-up when the weather is really cold, lots of people here use paraffin heaters. You can buy them in places like L'Eclerc (the bati, not the food supermarket), and M Bricolage. We bought one for €99 and it's really useful for instant heat when needed. It doesn't smell like paraffin heaters used to years ago, and it's also very cheap and clean to run.
I hope there's something useful here. If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know!

thanks for that jean - i am in the process of placing an order with spice of life, i have asked them to find some stuff from one of their suppliers, if they can, it will be quite a big order! however, it does work out much cheaper buying from them than buying here.
thanks kathy , i will look up the first link and am a frequent flyer on the other two (anglo info and total france) i am rather excited about that.
the paraffin heater is a great idea, and seeing that i am going to leroy merlin later this week to purchase some planks for shelves in the garage, i could buy one of these too. great idea.
well i suppose i can go and have some lunch now - delicious warming soup and some french loaf, sounds good to me and then a bit of working out which top up health insurance to go for will be my afternoon task. some crochet this evening will round it all up rather nicely and ... if i can fit in a walk too, that will be ace.
have a lovely, but cold, day everyone.

Hi all, hope you are all keeping nice and warm.
It`s cold here and sleety showers so fully expecting to see white stuff soon.
Sock knitter - knitted tinsel........sounds pretty but I think I`d get fed up to-ing and fro-ing with 2 stitches for aaaages.
Mioliere - the farm shop/cafe etc sounds smashing and the chance of a p/t job too !! Will they pay you in sausages and pork chops ?? Yum.
Had a bit of a shock tonight. Friend with breast cancer had hospital appt today expecting to hear when her radiotherapy starts. It`s not. She has to go back in for another op on the 6th Dec instead - seems it has spread further into the lymph nodes and blood vessels _pale_ I`m trying to stay positive for her but it`s difficult to know what to say and of course the mind is thinking all the wrong things......
Think I`ll go and do a bit more of little J`s cardie to calm the brain, well what passes for a brain in my case
Oh, I got another C.......s pressie today - well reserved it online for collection tomorrow. Bargain, half price jewellery box. So pleased I didn`t buy it last week when we talked about it, saved some pennies(so might get some wool)
Double celebrations in April then Chalky. Hurrah.
Hugs for all who need them, Maytaurus, Shelley etc. sorry brain fail again.

Morning all, it's freezing..........even the dogs have stayed in their baskets. I started a scarf for my sister last night, but as she's staying here for the time being I had to say it was for me. She keeps saying what a nice colour though, It's this patten in lilac http://www.freepatterns.com/magnify.html?pattern_id=3674

Hi everyone. Early start for me - I needed to get some online work done to a tight deadline, so I got up early and did it. I'd rather do that than leave it till later and end up having to do it in a rush. I shall make up for this virtuous behaviour by having an afternoon snooze!
Kinsey - what a gorgeous pattern! Thank you so much for posting the link. Another one on my 'to-do' list, I think.
It's freezing cold here, too; probably the coldest it's been this year. DH has gone to work in my car because his van needs diesel and the filling stations were closed by the time he got home last night. (Oh, for the late night filling stations in the UK, sigh!), I need to go shopping so will have to use the van, and I will kindly fill it up for him, too, if I can find out where the diesel goes in! I've never filled it before - hope I remember that it's diesel and not petrol.
Elaine - I'm sure when I start working at the farm (probably in the new year) that I may be bringing home the bacon, literally, now and again! We helped for nothing all last week just to get everything ready in time. We didn't expect anything but they forced us to take some produce, and it's all delicious.
Chalky - did Will and Kate consult you first, to ask if you minded! After all, it's a special day for you, isn't it?
DPixie - the paraffin comes in 20 litre containers which are quite heavy. It's worth buying one of the little hand pumps they sell (which should be in the same section of the store) which makes it easier to fill the heaters up. They also sell a tap that you attach to the container of paraffin. Don't forget batteries, too, because they are needed for the ignition. To my mind, there is no difference between the cheaper paraffin (from €16 to €23) and the so-called odourless (anything from €29 upwards for the same amount) - they both only smell on lighting and extinguishing; within five minutes you can't smell the paraffin at all. I always keep an old rag handy when I'm filling the tank just in case of spills.
Well, I'm crocheting something for my SS, so I won't reveal what it is until everyone's swapsies have been done! I'm enjoying doing it, though. I'm getting more organised by the hour now that DH is out every day!
I suppose I'd better go and clear away the breakfast things, then have another cuppa.
Maytaurus - I do hope you are feeling a lot better these days.
