We can't afford 3 or 4 or 5.
I fully understand that circumstances can change and hopefully by the Grace of God we will be ok, HOWEVER vast numbers of people have more children than they can afford knowing the Tax paying public will subsidise them. This has grown over the past 13yrs of the Nu Labour Socila Engineering Project and hopefully it will now stop....
I grew up on a council estate and know many many people who have 4,5 or even 6 kids and all bar none "Expect" to be housed and not "Hope" to be housed.....
As for the "extortianate cost of housing" Blame that my friend on the last two Governments who are to blame for 1/ Total lack of Social Housing, 2/ HPI which has led to overpriced private housing sector and 3/ Forcing people to invest in B2Let to fund retirement due to Gordon Brown raidng the pension funds....'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans'-John Lennon

I'm pretty sure that people have been having more children than they can 'afford' for far longer than 13 years. I find it really difficult to comprehend the idea of sitting down and working out a financial plan for the next 18 years before deciding to have a child. I always thought that it was human nature to want to reproduce, yet many people on this and other forums seem to talk about children as thought they were some kind of financial investment rather than the product of a loving, natural relationship.
Thank you for common sense.
My gran (a lovely liverpudlian) married a belfast shipmaker, way back in the very early 1940's. They went on to produce 12 children, she was a stay-at-home mum (obviously back then!), they survived comfortably on one wage, even managing to buy their council home in the 80's. With no benefit assistance whatsoever.
I'd love to see that to be possible these days. It simply isn't. The cost of living is far too high. Rents (even if you are lucky enough to rent from the council) could not be covered by one-working-parent on a low income.
The self-righteous brigade are harking back to days of old through rose tinted spectacles. All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -

In fact this is so poignant, I want to quote it again.

So to all those that seem to think children are some kind of plasma TV that should be saved up for. Up yours! All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -

I see.
Not at all. I believe in providing for your own children by your own efforts. Why is this such a radical concept to you?0 -

At no point do I consider you radical at all.
Why do you think that poor people should save to have children? All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -
. I always thought that it was human nature to want to reproduce, yet many people on this and other forums seem to talk about children as thought they were some kind of financial investment rather than the product of a loving, natural relationship.
Exactly and thats mainly down to people being incentivised to have kids through the benefits system, WTC and CTC etc..
Your very sadly wrong if you fail to see why people should take resposability for their own actions. It smacks of Socialims which as we know always fails when they run out of other peoples money.
As for your 1st comment about "Human Nature to want to reproduce" yes your right but I would have hoped that as a society we have progressed past caveman mentality.......0 -

Having children is a lifestyle choice and, like all lifestyle choices they should be planned for as much as possible. Before reliable contraception became available that could be difficult but for the last 40 years I think that most sensible people have planned in this way.0 -

Having children is an inherent trait of human nature. In fact of all species. To deny that, is a serious misunderstanding of nature and genetics.
Hahaha @ lifestyle choice. Children are not plasma TV's or Ford Mondeos. All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -

And that expresses in two words why the world is full of feral children and people who feel the state owes them a living.
People shouldn't be animals who rut and breed indiscriminately but rational beings who understand how important children are and what a responsibility it is to bring them into this world.0
