Okay, so my friend has this phone now and is slowly getting used to it, but has no idea if apps are being downloaded. She clicks install and it says it will be downloaded, but has no idea when or if it has :o

Can anyone recommend some good apps as well or a site explaining them? She's tried the twitter app and has no idea if it's worked and she's getting frustrated :o

To answer your original question, when you select 'download' from the Market, a little icon appears at the top of the phone that looks like two lines with an arrow. Once it has actually finished downloading, the little icon moves over to the far left. If you drag that icon down, it will open a window that tells you it has been installed.

A good site to download and explain apps is HTC APPS
although it's far easier to download them staright to the phone via Market.

When she accesses the Market on her phone there is a "downloads" button, press that and she can see what she has downloaded.

There are a lot of apps so it depends what she is after, but I have a couple of games and ASTRO file manager, RAC traffic, Trippo Mondo translator, Tesco Locator and Advanced Task Killer to name but a few.

I see the beebplayer has been discontinued as iplayer support should be part of the next version of Android.

Tesco locator seems a pointless app to me. There's one on every ****** corner. :D

Thanks for that, she spotted something like that yesterday when she downloaded an app.

    Thanks for the link :)

Something strange has happened - her balance has increased by £10 and she didn't make an attempt to top up :o She'll check her bank balance shortly, but it's a concern already.

Bank Balance checked - no money has been taken for the £10 top up :o

downloading apps shouldnt take much time unless the memory is full already in which case it can take longer than usual in my experience.

htc updates for desire can be seen here http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=312&act=sd&cat=all

use the www.htcapps.com for descriptions of the apps. downloading is a lot easier if you use the QR code method (funny looking square barcodes) described on that website. the first time it may take long but once you get used to the QR code method you will be downloading apps in seconds using that method.

For those who want to use QR codes see http://htcapps.com/ for loads of apps with QR codes and they are well categorised with brief reviews of the apps. This link tells how to download the apps using the QR codes http://htcapps.com/how-to-download-htc-apps/ Hope this helps some who are new to android phones like me.

also some other things she might find useful are as below.

VOICE ACTIVATED INPUT for Google search and typing in any text field.

The desire does not have voice search and voice activated typing like in the nexus one when it comes from HTC
BUT if you want to have voice input then follow these links and enjoy !
for voice search, do what it says in the following link qnd you can do voice activated searching in google after that http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-voice-search-to-htc-phones/
for voice activated typing using the HTC sense keyboard (which has been modified by jonasl of forum xda developers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416 ) see this link http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-full-voice-to-text-to-htc-desire/
follow the instructions and you will have voice search in google and voice activated typing in any text box after doing the above. It just takes a couple of minutes to do this. Hope many of you who are not aware of this modification like this useful feature. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ROOT THE PHONE FOR USING THIS MODIFICATION and it will not void your warranty. this will be just like any other app that improves the functionality of the phone.
the above is mainly for the desire but looks like some legend users have been able to implement this feature by this method and surprise surprise some hero owners seem to have been able to implement this feature as well.
For the desire please install the high resolution keyboard. for the legend and the hero you need to instal the low resolution keyboard as per other users experience using this.
please note the voice activated typing – jonasl htc ime mod is version 25. there is a version 26a beta present and also another version for froyo see the link for xda developers for those who are interested further in exploring the issue

some other websites where you can get hundreds of QR codes for easy fast downloading are as below
http://www.cyrket.com/search?category=6953&market=android&sort=popular on this link click the app that you are interested in and then you will get the QR code, scan that using the method explained in "how to download the apps using the QR codes http://htcapps.com/how-to-download-htc-apps/ " and you will be downloading apps as fast as can be done. this method is much faster than manually typing the names of the apps that you want to download especially if you want to download loads of apps.

some apps that i can recommend are
    shopsavvy
    google maps
    google navigation
    google translate
Or she might prefer to bookmark this Google page to all Google mobile features http://m.google.co.uk/?dc=gorganic

i think i prefer netcounter instead of 3g watchdog.

Downloading apps should take only a few seconds if you memory is not full and network speed is ok. But different networks seem to be offering different speeds, so that might be an issue too. As far as I know some on three seem to be getting 7500mbps nearly, I get Bout 5400mbps download speeds. Many on T-Mobile here seem to be getting max of 2000mbps downloads. Dont know the download speeds of the other networks.

i like the following apps too

    http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.google.android.apps.maps/

    http://htcapps.com/google-sky-map-for-htc-free/

    http://htcapps.com/movies-by-flixster-free-htc-apps/

havent tried this yet but it looks interesting http://www.androidfreeware.org/download/memoryup-personal-3.5

    http://www.androidfreeware.org/download/stocks-0.4.5

this might be useful for anyone needing to make expense claims http://www.androidfreeware.org/download/proongo-expense-1.2.33

this might be useful come upgrade time for deciding what sort of mobile phone plan you need http://www.androidfreeware.org/download/phonalyzr-1.5.1

    http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.google.android.apps.unveil/ google goggles

another interesting one by first impressions http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/dk.mvainformatics.android.motiondetector/

    http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.dataviz.docstogo/

    http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.speakwrite.speakwrite/

    http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.imkurt.metaldetector/

    http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/art.wild.gdocs/

    plus addon to above http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/art.wild.gdocs.extra.io.document/

but you could probably directly access gdocs via the web browser anyway and might not need the above two links.

check your network speed with this http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.xtremelabs.android.speedtest/

    free wifi http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.wefi.wefi/

by the way you can use the cyrket website to track down apps for any phone platform and not just for android. i think many other websites just copy the QR codes from cyrket or indirectly link via cyrket website.

remember to download via the QR codes method which is described in my prev post and the QR codes are available on cyrket website as well. makes life a lot easier while downloading via QR codes.

also check out the various london underground apps on the market and the trainline app (paid) or train times uk app. or barclays app.

purchasing music via amazon may be cheaper and drm free http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.amazon.mp3/

your friend might want to see the desire videos on http://www.geekanoids.co.uk/reviews/tag/htc to learn to use the htc desire better.

last but not the least, tell her not to forget to update the firmware to froyo 2.2 when available mostly on the 23rd june as per reports. see http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=312&act=sd&cat=all for downloads when this is available (if it isnt available over the air for updates). you can find the user manual and FAQs here too

if you use yahoo mail then use the mobile version, get the link from here http://uk.mobile.yahoo.com/ and then download the app from that link that you get from your mobile sms webpage. once you login, you can get your mail just like the gmail app.

The battery life is poor. She needs to charge a couple of times a day.

Now, she's downloaded a ringtone from play.com . Play say it has been sent, but she has no idea where it has gone. She put in the right number - does this arrive as a text or does it automatically get put somewhere on the phone? It's not in ringtones.
