Police banging on door at 5.30 this morning!

So, ex OH and I split last month. His car broke down last week, and 2 days ago 2 police came round at about 7 in the evening to find him as his car has been found "abandoned" in a lay by and the council apparently contact them routinely about cars like this apparently.

I explained we had split to them etc, passed on his forwarding address and contact details. they said they would sort it, very nice etc.

I called him, he explained he had broken down, and had contacted scrap man to collect it after BH weekend.

Fast forward to 5.25am this morning, woken by doorbell repeatedly rung, front door being banged on :eek:

As it is just DD and I in the house, I ran to a front bedroom window, saw the police car, and legged it downstairs.

Opened the door.........they demanded ex OH, I explained the situ again, passed on info, I asked it if was just about the car, as I could not imagine they would be so aggressive at the door for this, they said "yes madam, the council do not like cars in lay bys" then went on their way.

So i just called his parents house were he is staying..........rang about 6 times going to answerphone, just kept calling back til someone answered. and gave him verbal hell!:mad::mad:

Just wanted to vent really.:D

But is anyone else surprised that the police were so forceful on the door and at such an early time on a Sunday (when most people would be asleep) for a car in a lay by?

They can be very forceful and it wouldnt surprise me if it wasnt for the very reason stated above as if you heard someone gently knocking at that time on a sunday morning how many of us would just ignore it in the hope they would go away especially if we cant be bothered to check who it is.

Are you sure they weren't being sarcastic? If it was something other than the car then presumably they wouldn't be able to tell you anyway?

Sounds very heavy handed if it does just turn out to be the car and I'd be tempted to pop down to the station to make a complaint. BUT, I suspect it's something more.

Maybe one of our posters is a police officer and will be able to give you a better idea.

Your ex would have been better having got rid of the vehicle earlier and also changing his address with the DVLC as he no longer lives at your address. It is so unfair of him letting you become involved in his problems.

It sounds a lot like they didn't believe he doesn't live there.
Knocking at 5:30am on a Sunday am, they were probably expecting to find him curled up in bed.
Well done for giving him an ear bashing.

Well that's what I thought at first........but they didn't ask to come in or anything, so theoretically he could have been there? Should I had asked them in? I wonder if I am likely to still get more visits?
But I passed on his parents/his address...............

Why give him hell about it? You have told the police where he is once already. You have spoken to your ex after the first time they called and in the time, he could not do much more than he has done in arranging for the vehicle to be scrapped - and even if he updated his address with DVLA when he moved out, their systems probably would not have caught up anyway.

I appreciate that your emotions may be a bit raw after a split, but giving him hell about what the police are doing is IMO unreasonable. Perhaps it is the local inspector who should receive your wrath.

I would have a problem opening the door to any strange male at that time in the morning, esp if I was dressed only in my night attire. The force seems a little disproprtional to the crime.

From experience I'd say there's more to it. I also know that police will generally start "chapping the door" fairly gently, but in order to get your attention, then yes, they do need to basically hammer on the door.

The DVLA are generally VERY fast in changing details on the PNC, as are the insurance companies, whose information is also on the PNC.

The fault lies with your ex for not changing his vehicle documentation to show his new address. The police can only go on the information given. Bear in mind the police had already been in touch with your ex about his vehicle, they don't like to be disregarded in this way.

You were definitely right in giving him hell!
