I've just checked on the Ciao community board and found this message:
Temporary account imbalances
Problem with Ciao accounts due to technical problems, some account balances have suddenly decreased to zero. We are currently dealing with this issue. All accounts will, of course, be recredited to the previous amount. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
So looks like panic over.
