OP another thing to consider is that it takes 9 months from conception to birth. if you want a baby asap but debt free in 12 months i'd start trying in 3 months time =P

you'll be suprised how many people you know will give you things they dont need anymore too - slides, toys etc

one thing that bothers me though, and this is purely my opinion - why do you want kids if you want to carry on working too? What enjoyment will you get going back after 6 months whilst someone else brings your kids up for you - whats the point in having them at all to see them evenings and weekends? couldnt you return to work part time to give yourself time with your kids? you'll be spending more time with your pupils than your own kids which doesnt seem right. please dont take offense to this. im not against working mums - a friend of mine has now gone full time (was part time) her kids are 6 and 10 and she hardly see's them. they grow up so quickly, it'd be a shame to work FT fron 6months..... i intend to go FT when my daughter is a little older. She's 3 now and iv been working PT since she was 1. It would destroy me working FT as she needs me too much still.

Really sorry to be so petty, but its Homo sapien. For someone so concerned with grammar use I thought it my duty to correct you.

    Actually, it's Homo sapiens....:p

Well done to the OP! You sound extremely sensible. I can't help but think that you would feel much better having the debt paid off and some savings behind you before you had a baby. You'd be much less stressed and that can only be a good thing for you and your family. Good luck!

But they didn't teach you to include an apostrophe?

I have never, ever seen it spelt without an S. Unless it's a reference to Ali G....??

Sapiens is the present participle of the latin verb "sapere", and means "wise". It's singular already, therefore no need to remove the S to denote the singular.

    It's definitely spelt with an S. :o

i thought Homo came from 'man', and sapien came from 'being'

    so humanbeing

however you usually find it only has an 's' on the end, if you split the word. so you can either refer to someone as Homosapien, or Homo Sapiens

    weird

Sapiens definitely comes from Sapere, and Homo sapiens is always 2 words. homosapien is just a misspelling. I just had a look online, and apparently it's listed in Urban dictionnary! lol http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=homosapien

Definitely wrong! Sapiens has nothing to do with the verb "to be" (which incidentally is "sum, esse".)

Sorry OP for hijacking your thread with some boring etymology...lol

The only bit I was originally correcting was the italiszation which is uber important :) You're right about Homo sapiens being the usual method of spelling.

    And yes, sorry OP :rotfl::rotfl:!

Just a sorry for myself MSE moan really...

So me and OH got married and we both so want a baby together (been together 4 yrs, he has 2 kids from previous marriage). Thing is, we both work 2 jobs and never see each other. Neither of us want to raise our children in that circumstance so we're saving hard, paying off our credit card (our only debt except mortgage), having no social life whatsoever and hoping desperately that we are in a financial position to feel comfortable to start trying for a baby next year.

Does anyone else ever look around and ask yourself how everyone else does it? We have friends, younger than us with brand new homes, cars, gadgets, sky tv, holidays, nights out and babies on the way. We also know people with kids, never worked a day in their lives yet always out partying, designer gear, top of the range cars, gadgets etc. Now knowing roughly the incomes of these couples, I cannot understand how they do it. OK so the couple on benefits get more than the other couple who work but I cannot understand how either makes the 'books balance'.

Here I am, sitting here on me lonesome whilst OH is at work (I'll be at work by the time he gets in) and I can't decide if the kind of people mentioned above are being irresponsible or we are being overcautious.

I'm not saying I want a lavish lifestyle with designer clothes and sports cars because I'm not that materialistic. I just want to feel comfortable enough financially to feel we are able to bring children into this world. In every other way, we are ready... just not financially.

Moan over! Sometimes you just need to get it out of the system so it makes sense!
    Ells x

these people you talk of are maybe in debt and putting everything on cards. You sound sensible anyway.
