Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Sky equipment does not cost a lot and is not worth any "protection" money.
If equipment becomes faulty, pay Sky £65 and they will replace the box or dish (or even do it for free if you threaten to cancel)0 -
Just wondering what people think of Sky Protect? I have it currently, but not sure it is really worth it. Especially as I've heard if you threaten to cancel Sky will send an engineer for free. Opinions please?
Thanks0 -
You're right it's not worth it. Cancelling Sky will usually cause retentions to them to ask why and you say it's not working and you don't want to pay to get it fixed. They might say we'll give you a new box and possibly an engineer visit in return for a 12 month commitment and you eventually agree to that. It won't be fixed same day so if that is important to you then keep the protection. I would just use freeview for a few days...
Some things covered by the Sky TV protect policy could also be covered by accidental damage cover on your contents insurance policy so if you have that you don't really need this too.
Also, if you are comfortable changing the box yourself then you could buy a new one every year online for less than the price as this policy. It won't cover the wires and dish but a call out really doesn't cost much anyway if you really needed it. If the remote broke then just buy a new one they are quite cheap. I'd keep the £99 premium aside just in case something went wrong.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Even if the customer actually pays for a Sky callout, it will only cost £65.
Sky Protect is a waste of money.0 -
Great thank you for your help. That confirms what I was thinking. I need to call them out for a new box anyway as I'm having a few problems with my existing one. But after the callout I'll phone up and cancel the policy.0
