  • I have had this since i took out Sky though because the wife sorted it i didnt know until i done a review of my finances a few months ago.
To summerise i recently upgraded to a HD package but still have this SKY protect coming out so:

    1. Am i covered for the minimum year WITHOUT sky protect?
    2. If i was to cancel should i just cancel my DD as a previous poster has done? (Carlbrand)
    3. Will i get some sort of compensation back?
    4. Am i obliged to keep it for a time period?

Equipment/installs for Sky are covered for the first 12 months regardless.
No, you would need to cancel your policy, assuming that there's no minimum term contract. Cancelling a DD does not cancel a contract.
The only person you can get any compensation from is your wife!

Don't bother. I've had about 3 box failures in 7-8 years and each time it's simple - you report it broken, they tell you the charge, you decide to cancel, they offer to fix/replace for free.

The subs so outweigh the repair cost...
What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • I have been with sky since 2004 and every year i pay a Monthly payment of just over £7.00 to Sky Protect (basically insurance cover)I am paying over £80 a year and ive never had a problem with my Equipment and i feel i am throwing money away.
    Do i need this insurance?

If the box breaks you can either buy a 2nd hand one on ebay or blag a new one from Sky.

If the cabling dish etc.. fails you can blag a free visit from Sky or pay the £65 call out fee.

    You do the maths.

No.it's a waste of money, you've paid Sky around £670 over the years, how many call outs have you had?...As Kurtis says, you can get a box off e-bay & any competent DIY'er can replace the cable themselves.
If you call SKy out,the service call comes with a 3 month guarantee anyway, but if you have a payment protection, then that's effectivly null as you're paying for it anyway!
That £670 could be used in so many other ways..holiday...new sofa...ect.Better in your pocket than Sky's!
  • Hi
After negative experiences with Sky Protect I have cancelled. Are there any alternatives that anyone can recommend?

Yes , stick the money you would be paying into a saving account

If the sky box fails and you are out of contract then a call threatening to cancel sky will bring an offer of a new box

    Same applies for the aerial

Quoting to emphasise that I agree with the above, and believe it is the only sensible option!

I concur, but add a warning, in the last couple of weeks the scamming merchants have rung up seemingly knowing I'm with Sky and offering to renew my cover, which I don't have.

They usually have a similar name to Sky Protect, which is provided by Domestic and General, and the only official scheme.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
