  • I really dislike most cheapie loo rolls, but I quite like the recycled loo rolls that you can find at Lidl. They're mentioned on the first page of this thread as well - something like 10 rolls for £1.10.

The paper is rolled somewhat loosely, so difficult to compare, but still very, very cheap and pretty environmentally friendly.

….also after a while i found that my "bits" were getting sore...…..
I know this is an old post from a recently boosted thread but….

…..As a sufferer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) I was intimately acquainted with the resultant SAS (Sore Anus/!!! Syndrome :D) caused by over frequent use of my anal sphincter.

I tried Anusol and various other mild anaesthetic creams but I have now found a solution that works for me.

I keep a pump dispenser of a basic unperformed moisturiser such as Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion by the loo and use it when wiping. I do the first few wipes as normal with dry tissue but then I apply a drop of the cream for the last few wipes.

This helps to keep the skin around the anus moist and helps prevent soreness or that horribly painful cracking and splitting.

Better to prevent the soreness with inexpensive cream like that than to treat the soreness with expensive Anusol.

I have never understood that.

As a man I hate that “last drop down the leg” that seems to happen no matter how much you shake and squeeze.

I always use a piece of tissue to soak up that final persistent drop.

There are never any yellow stains on my under crackers. :D

...use cloth wipes and wash them!

    I hear you go!

We use cloth nappies on our baby so figured that using cloth wipes for us was no different.

Just in case you think I'm a weirdo there's a very active forum on another site that discusses eco-friendly, money-saving tips such as this (that's where I got the information from).

Without going into details, cloth is MUCH more pleasant to use than toilet paper. Some folk just cut up old T-shirts in about 6inch squares. Others (like me) cut up flannel cot sheets from charity shops and hem them up so they don't unravel. In fact anything that is soft and absorbent is good (old flannel nighties, old towels, etc...). Very money-saving! My stash probably cost about £3. :money:

It took some guts to take the plunge but now we hate using toilet paper...just feels yucky.

You gotta try it to believe it! ;)

This is something I've often thought about - and I have some questions!

How did you get your family to agree to this?
Where do you 'store' the used ones?
    Are they used for everything?

Hope this isn't going in to too much detail!!

And that is exactly how DH tells if I've bought 'economy' loo roll - if it sticks to the skin during the 'dabbing process', I'm in deep do do

even though i have a few packs of toilet rolls.... i still want to use and buy in an econoical way......

my kids dont know the meaning of use sparing ... so they used to have along long...strip of loo roll... which was a total waste......

then i read some where.. that if you squosh.. the loo roll so its flat... the sheets will brake after 2 or 3.. so then the kids can not mimick the andrex adverts......whick i find really does work.... my loo rolls are now lasting longer...:D

also do you find buying cheap is a false economy ? no fills etc....

if there is no offer i buy the shops own brand, but not the cheapest...but if there is an offer on a branded loo roll.....bogof...or intro offer.. then i will buy that....

what do you do... how do you save money on your loo rolls..?

is there one brand that you def... save money on... or are they much of a muchness...?

are we taking thrift.. os moneysaving too far..with loo rolls ?

do you think i better get a life rather than worrying how much i can save on my loo rolls ?

sorry if the subject of loo rolls have been a topic for a thread before.....
but i was thinking.. it is in every household.....everyone buys it ( or aquires it from other sources )......

so theis could be n area where we could save some pennies...when we spend a penny :D

I remember when we had our niece with us - I used to acuse her of having a trunk not a nose :rotfl:

I actually worked out how much moneywise we were spending on loo roll & then how much we would spend if just 2 sheets were used 5 times a day each. I wrote this out & pinned it on the wall oposite the loo! Neice was very shocked by the ANNUAL cost I had posted!

I realise this was posted for npsmama but i do the same thing, so i hope you don't mind me commenting on this too. You know, in many other countries (Middle East, Asia) they do this normally and consider you not to be cleaning your bits proprly by using just paper. They see it as you are just smudging the mess around a bit. Let me ask you a question: - if you got poo on your hands, would you (a) wash them and then dry or (b) just wipe with a bit of tissue? I think most of use would want to wash our hands. This is the way it is viewed in other parts fo the world.

Sorry for the (toilet) details below....

Firstly i do still have some loo roll for visitors. But for use at home, basically after going to the loo you wash your bits with water (a long spout watering can (the indoor plants variety) helps reach the bits, then use a flannel to dry off. I bought a whole set of different coloured flannels (grey in our case) to indicate which ones were NOT to be used for washing your face. Then once you have dried off, put the flannel in the wash. I wash every couple of days so doesn't get smelly. If you are doing a No.2 then i do it slightly different, we personally use a SMALL amount of paper to get the worst off, then use water and then wipe with a flannel. If the No.2 was not too messy, then just use it like with a No.1. Since DH & DS get alot of diahorrea, using a bit of paper first saves some mess.

This works fine with us and limits the amount of paper used. I used to soak and then wash DS&DD's nappies in the wash with other stuff, so i see this as no different, in fact probably less messy.

I actually don't feel very clean when just using paper when out in town nowadays.

DS & DD have been brought up like this so they see no different. I actually had to "educate" DS on how to just use paper when he started school. He hates it and says he feels smelly not using water! DH thinks i am a skinflint by doing this method but goes along with it. I think it saves moneybut more imporantly you feel cleaner and your bits don't get so smelly - especially in summer (you all knwo what i mean...)

At one time we had three young women living with us and our loo roll consumption was HUGE! I then had a huge economy binge to pay for some house renovations. I bought Tesco value rolls - within days the consumption had plummited, it was not so easy on the nose and skin.

Now they have all gone and I buy the nice stuff. I got a great bargain at Lidle last time I was there, massive pack of Charmin for £7.99. It has lasted us for 3 months, and it was nice to use.

You could try the packs that are like tissue packs and fill them with single sheets after they have finished. Ad makers are not stupid are they? They know that kids will mimic the add and pull long lengths, means you buy more.

I have found that a lot of people I live with coat the toilet seat with loo roll & use about 3 rolls per week. I never understand why???

When living on my own I go through about 1 roll per month (I am female by the way!).

Why do some people go through so much, are they afraid of catching a disease??

I tend to bulk buy when there is an offer on eg in Somerfield 2 weeks ago they were selling 9 packs of Lotus for £2.25 so I bought 4 packs. There is always 1 supermarket which has a half price offer on the good brand toilet rolls.

    Help please?

Fixtureferrets is advertising the Nouvelle 4pk toilet rolls BOGOF - £1.66 for 8, I think it's good but I'm not a member of the site and can't see promotions with saving value more than £1 so I don't know which shop is having the promotion.

does anyone know which supermarket/store is currently selling these at BOGOF?

    Many thanks

Use this website instead, it is exactly the same but free to use :)
