I found a baby artichoke today!!!!! It is tiny, about 1cm round, but perfect. I planted the tubers earlier this year and thought i wouldn't see any until next year, but a perfect wee baby has appeared. Off now to find out if I can cook any of the stalks. My dh is from Algeria, and I know they use them there, steam them and have them with a sauce, but I'm not sure if I can do that here.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

BTW, anyone know what they would be called? I googled artichoke stalks, and it seemed to be the stalk that the artichoke heart was growing on that I found. What I am talking about is the big wide stalks with leaves on top.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Today I learned that I can use an electric drill. I was trying to bang drainage holes in the bottom of some large tubs with a hammer and old screwdriver but don't have the strength...thanks, arthrits  . I got quite cross with myself, then thought of the drill I was given last year but have always been dubious about using. Had a go and discovered I can do it. Now, what else can I find to drill holes in?0

Congratulations jedi, not many who get an allotment and don't have hours of work to do before they even plant anything, that's great news. Have fun!
This morning I discovered 3 rockets - of the firework type, not salad leaves - on my lawn. Annoyed at first, but thinking back to last night when I enjoyed watching the small children in the orchard beyond my garden, and recalling days of bonfires, potatoes, chestnuts and parkin. Simple pleasures and memories to make me smile on these chilly, dark evenings0 -
While I was sweeping this morning a grey wagtail was bathing in a huge puddle. So very beautiful.0
