ive never used cake covering (value brand eating chocolate works out cheaper per 100g, and has a higher cocoa content too), so cant comment on how it would differ from candy melts. but the only difference i have found between eating choc and candy melts is how it sets and the speed it sets at. candy melts set hard, so crack when you bite into them. if i wanted to achieve this with eating choc, i would have to temper it, and i cant be bothered with the faff.
also candy melts are flavourless (unless you buy the flavoured ones), whereas white chocolate can be quite sickly, and you also have to be careful when colouring it, as it can seize
i just prefer the ease of using candy melts, espec if i want bright primary colours

Talking about the cake pops - mine are actually white chocolate - not fondant! White chocolate coloured with some food colouring paste. They went down a storm! I am another that cant be bothered with tempering chocolate - but then i have the problem of the cake pops being delicate - they would need to be kept cool or start melting very quickly. I just can not bring myself to buy candy melts - it will bump up the price of candy melts so much.0

I made some cake pops yesterday to sell at a charity coffee morning. I always use candy melts, as they set hard and dont need tempering, unlike chocolate.
You can get candy melts fairly cheaply from http://www.cakescookiesandcraftsshop.co.uk/acatalog/Candy-Melts.html
I'm going to make some cupcakes for the coffee morning layer. I'll post pics tonight0 -

Hobbycraft sell candy melts for £2.99 - one thing that they sell cheaper than ones on the internet!
(I always find H/C rather expensive for most things!)

I always thought I had a sweet tooth...but have just made some coconut balls - desiccated coconut, condensed milk, icing sugar wrapped in white chocolate and dusted in cocoa powder....far too sickly sweet for me. As I'm making cupcakes for my grandsons christening I thought I would have a go at making these beforehand. Don't think I'll bother making them again though ! yuk0
