need fathers permission to change childs surname?

it depends on the name, and the behaviour of the fatherBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

As far as I know he has double barrelled her name (but I have to ring the school tomorrow to confirm this). Is there anyway that he could get a passport in the double barrelled name for her.?
Most likely not as he'd need to use a birth certificate and the passport would be issued in that name.
It sounds, in this case, that he's just added it to create a link between them that is very easy for people to see in the same way my grandparents did. He should have spoken to you about it. It's not quite as bad as some cases (I know one where the father changed the child's known as name to his own name and dropped the mother's name completely, which is very not on imo).0 -
I didn't need the childrens dad to sign passport forms when DD1 got hers last year.
But he will have to sign a form stating the childs surname can be changed.. and also if they request the child be adopted by the new husband.
My brother uses my dads name and has done since he was enrolled in nursery at 3 despite the fact he has never had his name changed legally.. he has a passport and bank accounts and everything in my dads surname.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Adults can call themselves anything they want as long as it is not done to defraud anyone.
Not sure if the same can be done for children. My godson is Tyler Mum'sName day to day at school and at the dentist and the likes, but on his passport he still has to be Tyler's Dad'sName.0 -
I always used to think that the permission of the other parent was always needed but I know someone that has just done this without the permission of her ex.0

as i understand it from the experience of a relative recently, the pwc can change the surname of the child as long as they do not take the other parent's name out WITHOUT PERMISSION i.e. my relative's ex wife got remarried and changed her daughter's name to a double barreled surname- he was told by a solicitor as long as they didn't take his name out there was nothing he could do about it0

I suppose you also think black children should languish in care rather than be adopted? And that lower class children should rot in council homes rather than - shock horror - be fostered by a snooty civilised family?0 -

Adoption is a whole different ball game to children losing their heritage because their mother denies them contact with their father and chooses to re-name them because she remarries....0 -
I think problems occur if you are a father and not married before Dec 2003.
I am in a similar boat. As a NR-Father, my child was born before 2003 (never married). My name is on the birth certificate and I obtained Parental Responsibility a year or so after we split.
From my understanding my childs surname cannot be changed without my permission and, due to my childs age, I would not give permission now as I feel it is their identity.
With regards to the passport side, I directly obtained my childs passport a few years ago, after asking their Mother if I could take them on holiday. She agreed and I got it no problem with no need for signatures from her. It was dispatched to my address.I'M NOT AS THINK AS YOU DUMB I AM...

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
This thread appears to me to have been moved to the correct place. But as there is no money saving involved, perhaps Glad will come along and throw it out to Discussion Time.
Hopefully not, because I think it is inappropriate to move such personal threads into a general daily politics and banter forum.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
