Look after your animals in this heat!

My dog and even my cats yesterday all looked fed up with the heat and just lay around. Luckily my house is pretty cool and I had a couple of fans going.
I walked my dog at 6am and again at 9pm and he was ok with that.
When I went out at 2pm it was baking and I saw several people walking dogs. All the dogs were panting like crazy and did not look happy. In particular a boxer and a black lab really seemed to be struggling. Why do people walk their dogs when it is so hot?The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
I saw some photos on another forum last summer from someone whose dog was suffering in the heat while they were camping, so they filled their roof rack box with water and put it in the shade of the tent as a doggy paddling pool.0

A cheap inflatable paddling pool is about a tenner @ Argos, worth every penny!
Obviously inflatable isn't ideal with dogs claws but buy some duct tape too to repair the inevitable punctures.
Mines 2-3 years old & is dotted all over with tape but it still does it's job.
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Yep sometimes there is no choice, most dogs will be ok for 10-15 mins as long as common sense is used.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

If you have a working dog, or a competing one imo its cruel not to accustom it to the heat. I am not suggesting that you run it ragged, far from it, and certainly not take it about in a hot car! Thats what mine hate about this time of year, fewer car trips, especially the one on fridays to collect my dh from the train station....its too hot for the dogs, but they still look hopeful when i lock up and when outside sit ears pricked by the car.
One of mine likes the heat, she is right now grumpy because i asked her to sleep in the shade now its mdday, the other is flat out inside on a concrete floor keeping cool. Individuals have different tolerances.0 -
Thanks for this thread, really interesting. I am fairly luck with my Stanley the Staffie as he is not too bound by routine and is happy with short or long walks. We too live in a flat but with a communal garden so in this weather I just take him out for short bursts to do his business then back into the cool. Thankfully our flat is very shaded and doesn't get as hot as some so windows open and a fan on him seem fine. He has however fell out with me as he loves going out in the car with me, and being in the car in general so me leaving him home when i go out has not gone down well :rotfl:The greatest gift you'll ever learn,is just to love and be loved in return:love:Nature boy - Eden Ahbez0

Our husky is just laying stretched out on the cold floor a lot. He also decided to make his own paddling pool by emptying out his water bowl on the floor and rolling around in it :P0

A few minutes is different but the two dogs I saw yesterday looked as though they had been out for a while and did not seem happy.
I walk my dog early (6.30 this morning) and late (about 9pm) and he does not go out inbetween in this hot weather. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
I saw someone with what I think were 2 Alaskan Malamutes today, one was hugely overweight & both were panting & no sign of any water being carried. Yesterday someone was in the park for well over an hour with an overweight Choc Lab running all over the place in the sun, it does worry me0
