How weird, i was just looking at the OU site as i've seen it mentioned a few times on here, by black saturn and a couple of others, i have had to leave my job for health reasons and am really unsure of what to do (dont want to go back to work till DS is older) and thought this would be good to get some knowledge and qualifications, want to study child and health i think.
Have been feeling a bit low lately and i think this will be good for me - plus it's free i think!:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
for those who are about to embark on/return to study, i cannot speak highly enough of stella cotrells study skills handbook - it is invaluable!
they are quite cheap on ebay/amazon, but your local library should also have a copy :beer:know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

For most people on benefits and a low income (actually they're quite generous with the definition of low income), the courses are free or at least heavily subsidised.
Take a look at the link I posted above and you'll find out if you qualify.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

If your signing up this year (sept/oct course start dates), I would be quick as they're extremely busy at the moment - policy now is 1 week to reply to emails (normally policy is within 2 days).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Good luck
I am sure we have a few OU graduates around here that can offer wose words.
The course I was looking at would cost 800 quid but was PG level, so I better get saving up!!:beer:0 -
Good luck to you both. It'll be hard work (trust me!) but also worth it (trust me again!)
Loads of people around here to answer questions/worries you might have, and once you're registered you'll find their online forums ('First Class') very helpful too.0 -
Good luck silverelephant. I love the OU, I'm on my 5th course and have accumulated 150 credits so far, this one will give me another 30 making 180 - just 60 more to FD. Its quite hard going at times what with work, family etc but well worth it. Use the forums associated with each course as they are a mine of info.silverelephant wrote:I'm torn between being really excited and apprehensive as I've just signed up for my first OU course! I've been aware for a few years now that if I was going to get any further with my employer I would need formal qualifications but up til now I've not been able to afford it. It's been some 15 years since I last sat (and failed
) exams or have written an essay.
I have found the debt free wannabe board invaluable in my quest to sort out my finances and I now hope I can hop on over here and feel the same about my fellow students
I am continuing to work full time and my chosen course is a 30 credit, minimum of 8 hours study per week. I hope I am going to have the discipline to fit it in - no slumping in front of the soaps cos I've nothing better to do lol. I have decided to start with this and see how I get on but my aim is eventually to work towards a degree - wow, would be the first in my family
I've been working my way through the fabulous Good Study Guide from the OU but really can't wait to get started proper, I hope my enthusiasm continues long into my course
Anyway, just thought I'd say my hellos :hello: before I bombard you all with questions
Good luck
