OMG Just Reg'd With OU!

Options
I'm torn between being really excited and apprehensive as I've just signed up for my first OU course! I've been aware for a few years now that if I was going to get any further with my employer I would need formal qualifications but up til now I've not been able to afford it. It's been some 15 years since I last sat (and failed :o ) exams or have written an essay.

I have found the debt free wannabe board invaluable in my quest to sort out my finances and I now hope I can hop on over here and feel the same about my fellow students :D

I am continuing to work full time and my chosen course is a 30 credit, minimum of 8 hours study per week. I hope I am going to have the discipline to fit it in - no slumping in front of the soaps cos I've nothing better to do lol. I have decided to start with this and see how I get on but my aim is eventually to work towards a degree - wow, would be the first in my family

I've been working my way through the fabulous Good Study Guide from the OU but really can't wait to get started proper, I hope my enthusiasm continues long into my course :D

Anyway, just thought I'd say my hellos :hello: before I bombard you all with questions :D

  • Hi, Well done on your registration and good luck with the course. I wish you well. Did you know you can apply for the course to be fee-free? Their income limit for free courses is apparently £25K, so quite generous.
  • I'm in Scotland so think the rules are different, believe me I looked into EVERYTHING before parting with my card number! lol

If you find that you are entitled to help (did you try the fee help calculator ??) you can retrospectively apply fro fee remission , apparently.

Iam on to my 4th course, passed 1 science course, failed latin, and Iam currentlyabout to finish the cert in astronomy and planetary science.

Iam signed up for law in feb and trying to fit in 2 short courses in between - once you get started , its hard to stop.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Hmmmm I don't want to contradict you but isn't the OU UK-wide. Mind you now you have paid it would maybe be too late to get it free. Could be worth a call to OU customer services tho. If necessary you could cancel your booking and then immediately sign up for it again and ask for the forms to claim the second time around. If not then sign up thru the web site next time as I know it comes up as a tick box if you want to apply for financial assistance.

    Hope that helps,

    Kay

Scotland has slightly different rules on the funding availability

  • Thats interesting - thanks I didn't realise the funding is different in Scotland. Might be worth checking out the income limit tho to be sure, if not, as I said before best of luck with the course.

I'm tentatively thinking about it myself - maybe I should try philosophy as I'm very good at thinking about things!
    Very best wishes

Congratulations, you won't regret it. What are you hoping to get a degree in?

PS - OU is international - you can study from anywhere in the world...
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
