cath-w, do you use a PIN when you pay by credit card in a shop in Belgium?

Do people find it a problem stopping other people from seeing their PIN when they type it in?

Yes, the Belgium Bank card uses the chip and pin system both in shops and when taking out money.

    The card has two uses;
    (1) as a debit card
    (2) as a 'cash' card. You can load the card with money from the hole in the wall and then use it like cash to buy low priced items such as a newspaper, chocolate etc.

No problem with the pin system, just need to use the usual precautions.

The good thing is that you can run a 'lights out' system. For example even when the petrol station is closed you can still get petrol because each pump has a terminal. You just put your card in, key in your pin, choose the pump you wish to use, pump the petrol and get a receipt.

But I can do that at my local ASDA with a magnetic strip card and no PIN required.

My bank has decided that it is simpler to issue me with a Chip & Signature card, than answer any of the difficult questions I put to them.

Chip & PIN is about liability shift from the banks to the retailers and the customers, and it stinks.

  • Used my chip and pin cards for the first time yesterday.

So easy and much quicker to use.

Most places have chip readers now and pin pads. If you see a pin pad and want to try your card then ask. Most places are just overriding the pin system as i initially found out yesterday. If you see a pin pad ask the cashier to let you use the chip and pin. Ask them not to override it.

Safeway appears to be fully PIN operational.
ASDA has the pin pads but they don't seem to be active yet.
    Wilkinsons is another place.

Anyone else know of the main high street stores where it is working yet??

We could build up a profile so people can find a store to try their new card out in.

    Thanks

    Karen,

Yes you can use the same PIN. Just change each card to the PIN you want to use. This practise will probably be frowned on by the card issuers. But let them frown! You need to use a system which works for you.

I have thought of using the same 3 digit pin for my cards with a different 4th digit (you need less than 10 cards for this to work). All I need to do then is remember which 4th digit applies to each card but this should not be too difficult as you can count the letters(e.g. Egg = 3, Halifax = 7).

Overall, I am not too bothered that the new system is being introduced as I'm quite good at remembering passwords/etc. But I am not convinced the new system will cut down on card crime.

thankyou for your suggestion re; chip and pin numbers
your idea of keeping first 3 numbers and changing the 4th for each card would work
    GREAT

Which organisations have actually started to issue chip and pin cards that actually work with chip and pin?

Has anyone actually used it yet?

    Be interesting to know.

    Thanks

Halifax Visa Debit cards are chip and Pin Enabled.

Am I right in thinking Chin 'n' Pin will make no difference to the security issues when making purchases online or over the telephone?

    ???
Took 2 Credit Cards to France having had them fully pinned previously.
Off the ferry at Ouistreham, First Petrol Station - Total-on the way to CAEN-it was UNMANNED with a PAD,but has a notice stating English Cards Not Accepted!
Though it did say "benvenue" when I put the Card in..though i chickened out at that point.......didnt want it gobbled on day 1...
    Thereafter...
At manned Petrol Stations and at Super U's , despite having a Pad, I was always asked to sign for either card. Always fill up at half a tank in France as the petrol Stations are not as numerous -also prices shot up from .8 Eu to 1.00 Euros per litre for Gasoil during 14 day visit!
