Just done my gas calculations -- and for 1 'unit' on the meter I get charged a maximum of 52p+vat (that's if I'm on the higher rate units)

I'm also Scottish Power -- dual fuel and internet discounts though I've not factored these in -- on the no standing charge fixed price until September 2009 tariff. But the units the meter measures in makes a difference..... mine's relatively new (under 7 years old) so measures in cubic metres. (And there are regional differences as well, but I didn't think they'd make that much of an impact  )

Mine's a new meter too.I got the calculations by dividing what my gas charged me after vat,by the no of units used on my meter and it comes out at that cost.Just took old reading from new reading and divided cost and that's what one unit from the meter is worth.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I cannot understand why these companies are allowed to make such huge profits, it is immoral.

It's not like choosing to shop in Marks and Spencers instead of a cheaper supermarket, we dont' have a choice about using gas or electricity, we are dependent on these companies. Makes me VERY angry indeed. I CAN make a stand but what about the elderly or people who are poorly or with young children, they can't avoid putting the heating on, and it maddens me that the energy companies are lining their pockets with their hard-earned cash.

And it makes me even angrier that there will be elderly people and young families who will go without to save money and they shouldn't have to do this at all.
    That's Numberwang!
  • My brother's been staying so I persuaded him to take me to Lidl last night to get heavy shopping (we don't have a car so only buy what we can carry usually - good way to savemoney!), and took DS2 (age 7) with us. He appeared at the trolley with a pack of waffles, and I said we didn't need them as we can make some in the waffle maker at the weekend, and he said "But buying these would save power!" :o

Guess the cut down on gas and electric message is getting over louder and clearer to the bairns... At least he doesn't want to add to Scottish ower's profits...just Lidl's lol!

Well ...I walked past my thermostat this morning and its reading the house temp is 13 degrees! I watched the weather last night and its only set to get colder here. My eldest ds got a huge wool blanket on his bed and said this morning he was really warm and my other too havent complained yet as they are well wrapped up in bed too. I sat watching tv covered in a fleece and was very warm .
The mornings are the worst at the mo as the house feels very cold. I could see my breath in the bedroom this morning after my shower!
Heat well or eat well?...the fuel companys and the government should be bloo'dy ashamed of themselves is all I have to say on the matter.
JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200:D FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200
  • Totally agree bertiebots, I can't believe when we live in one of the richest nations in the world that a massive proportion of the population has to decide if they are going to eat or heat their homes this winter, I guess I am fortunate in that we (me and dh) earn good wages but even we have to be careful now cos utility bills are so high.

I still don't understand why the price of electric and gas has to be linked to the price of oil, what has that got to do with it?

Ok the government has introduced these grants for making our homes more fuel efficient, but my home hasn't got cavity walls cos its so old, so how to we solve that?, also it can e as fuel efficient as we like but we can't cut down our electric use much more unless we start using candlelight (and risk the house setting on fire!)
Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £0

double checked my calculations the same way, and my figure is deffo what I'm paying. last bill had 15 meter units all at highest rate, and cost (pre-vat and discounts) was £7.71 (so 51.4p/unit).

I`ve just worked out my gas after reading this, each unit is £1.42 and a bit then add vat on top!

I know that vat is only a small percentage but it would help if this were knocked off.

I thought that vat was supposed to be charged on luxury items only!

I`ve just turned down the thermostat and will keep monitoring the temperature.

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p
  • hello everybody, loving this thread loads, but i have 2 questions that have probably been answered but i cant find-

    1. Whats cheaper to run laptop plugged into mains or pc?

    2. I dont have a microwave because i find them big and bulky and i dont really use it to much however i'm now wondering if it would be cheaper to run a microwave and cook in that? any thoughts?

    thanks muchly

I've just come off the phone to Scottish power and checked my Tariff and the lady said that each unit on my digital meter would work out as I say as just over £1.37 and she did confirm I was on the cheapest tariff.
I actually feel sick at the thought that I dare'nt put my heating on now. There's just no way I could fork out almost another £200 a month just to have the house heated like previously, and that was'nt all day.
I guess I'm just going to have to wear double thermals and keep warm.My only problem is I have quite bad arthritis in my spine, knees and hands and the cold does'nt do anything for this so I'll just have to step up my medication and lump it.
    God help us all.
