  • If my oh has his way it will probably only be on for 2 weeks in January. I hate being cold. I did think it was colder last night. I was lying in bed with cold feet but too lazy to put the extra quilt on. I mght tonight though.

With me its my feet...a problem easily solved. However, I suspect my little one has the same issue, but she won't keep socks or anything else on her feet.

I am determined that the heating will stay off.

I'm aiming for Nov 1st - last year I was having work done on the house, and didn't have heating until mid-November. Until my parents came to stay it wasn't an issue!

My thermostat is usually set to 17 degrees anyway - this is warmer than what I grew up with, and although it can feel a bit chilly if I'm sitting around doing nothing, if necessary I can close the door and set the radiator thermostat higher for that room. I only heat the bedroom if I'm ill. There's no point in having heating on in the mornings, as I'm supposed to be up, out of the door and in the gym before I've had time to notice the temperature, and if I'm out after work, that helps too!

Mostly when I'm at home in the evening I'm doing things (cooking, laundry, housework etc...;) ) so am moving around enough to keep warm. When I'm doing paperwork or working from home I always have the option to wear thermals, sheepskin boots (one of my favourite items of clothing - and they're pink :o ), wristwarmers, fleeces, scarves etc. Plus I try not to sit still for too long, and vary what I do to keep warm.
  • Our thermostat is set at about 16deg so the heating will click on if the temperature in the hall drops below that. It has only done so three times so far and has only stayed on for about 20 mins. I would prefer to have it turned off completely until Nov. 1st but DH reasons that if it is really cold we need to keep the house aired. I suppose we could get some really cold days in October and some milder ones in November so perhaps it will even itself out.

If I were to sit in the lounge in an evening I would need to use the gas fire. It is a large room and north facing and VERY cold. I have put an easy chair in the dining room which is south facing so gets any sun when it's going and has the added benefit of the back boiler behind the gas fire. I don't need any heat in here other than my lap top, my knitted cardi and a thin scarf round my neck and I am very warm.

When DH drags himself away from his computer upstairs he will join me in here and sit in a garden chair. Aw bless...., At least he has gone that far in joining in with my efforts to conserve energy so I guess I have to meet him half way and let him have the thermostat on.

  • I'm in for the 1st November challenge too, have got a woodburner for back up though.
