Avoid using GAS and ELECTRIC !

Hi
For those fans of British Thermals they are offering 10% of their thermals, code SEPT182. I used it with their budget mens long sleeved T-shirts 6 for 30 pounds and budget womens 6 for 30 pound which came to 54 pounds which meant free p&p as well since order was over 50 pounds. So that's us warm for the next 3 or 4 years. Good investment:D
Watch out for Netto, they have an offer for thermals, long johns for £ 2 each (too late for me, I have just received my British Thermals).
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Every time I feel chilly in the evenings now, I think of all those gas & electricity board executives pocketing their big bonuses and think "Damn it, I'm not going to switch the central heating on until October 1st and inflate their profits." So on goes another thick seater and I snuggle up on the sofa under my thick woolen blanket. My OH, who doesn't feel the cold like I do, thinks I'm a hedghog burrowing down for hibernation. Just wait until he sees the garish striped woollen rugby bedsocks I've got lined up for the colder nights!0

I cant quite believe my dh is on board with the fact that I am determined not to put the heating on till November ....he used to sit next to the radiator with shorts on. I think its shear bl**dy mindedness to be honest ,I feel the same about lining the fat cats pockets as primrose. But we are very well prepared with blankets etc etc. What suprises me too is that the kids havent noticed that we havent used the heating...I would usually have it on at the first sign of a chill. TBH I think I had gone a bit soft and am now enjoying the challenge!!
My next challenge is to figure out how to cook cheaply without spending a furtune on an alternative to my leccy guzzling old oven ....help!JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

my OH walked home the other night and told me how cold it was outside. He said 'i dont want the children getting cold so i am putting on the heating whatever you say'. I explained that they were fine and infact my daughter had already kicked her covers off and was too warm. Anyway i let him put it on but quietly turned it off as he walked away 30 seconds later. He commented later on how it felt warmer and i just nodded!Me, DD1 19, DS 17, DD2 14, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/19

The more I think of them making so much money from us makes me more willing to wrap up more and do without the heating.Let's hope a good few more feel the same and let's hope they don't make so much as they'd hoped and need to.We need to show them we're just not going to put up with this extortion.I lived without central heating for years, just like many others so I'm not going to worry about not using it as much.0 -
They are NOT getting our hard earned money and that is a fact. Its early today and it is dark outside but I have got one 25w light on in the kitchen whereas in times gone past it might have been 300w via those ceiling lights
We used to leave the lounge door open in the evening but no more since I felt the warmth coming off the top of the 36" lcd tv. OK I did upgrade my layers by putting on a thicker dressing gown instead of thin cotton but I still have lots of options for coping with cold
Getting washing dry is the worst but is fine as long as I think ahead ie the sun is my friend. I have to dry everything inside so I look at the forecast and get a load or two done before I go to bed, guaranteed that the sun streaming through the window will finish it off0 -

Thats the challenge I'm working on at the moment as I've realised that my electric cooker is costing us a fortune!
So far the microwave is looking really good value - cooked a chilli from scratch took 19 mins on high and cost of leccie was 5p. Food done to perfection. First time I've cooked mince in the micro but was lovely - easy to drain off any fats, too.
My slow cooker (5ltr) cost 19p for 7 hrs use on low. That was plenty of time to cook at spaghetti bolognaise from scratch.
I know I'm not on the cheapest tariff to be had but just standard, but it gives you some idea.
Must go off a research more microwave recipes as I'm only used to heating things up in it and making custard! :rolleyes:MAY GROCERY CHALLENGE £0/ £250

Hi everyone,
have a look on the remoska thread for a way to cut the costs of cooking food.

My microwave is actually a combi -- and I figure that as it's a smaller capacity it must be cheaper to run as a conventional oven than the full size one is? It certainly heats up from cold to required temp quicker, which seems to hold with this assumption
My roasting dish fits into the combi, and I always use it's specific 'baked potatoes' setting when we have those with cheese/beans (3 spuds in 22 mins, and with 'proper' skins). The only times I regularly use the full size oven now are for baking or oven chips (tray won't fit in combi, so we normally have them pies or something else than can be cooked in the oven at the same time) -- so about once every couple of weeks at the moment.
But the baking is likely to become a weekly thing as I'm going to have my younger grand-daughter here for most of every Monday from November (and it's something we can do together as she was 3 in April).Cheryl0
