  • I have worked out that my electricity metre goes up by 21 units a week and my gas by 4. have no idea what this means but does it seem reasonable for a single person not in winter?

Poppyoscar - I think that is very reasonable.
  • Thanks JenniO.....long may it continue then!! Except I don't think it will as OH is arriving in a few days from warmer climes and I think the gas may rocket! I'll ahve to introduce him to the joys of fleecy blankets and a hot water bottle! LOL!!

Family of 3 (and 2 dogs) with a 4th person home on leave every now and again (including a 3 week stretch in our last billing period), living in a 4-bedroomed detached property.

Our last bill (52 days from early July to late August) averaged 13 units a day on the electricity and 9 a day on the gas. (Our previous one which was 67 days from May to July - without a visitor for more than a weekend or two - was 13 on electric and 11 on the gas per day on average). We don't have a fire of any type, the water is heated by gas, the hob is gas, the central heating is gas (but other than a couple of days when I discovered a fault on it, it shouldn't have kicked in), and everything else is electrical. We also use the tumble drier a couple of times a week - partly due to the weather, and partly due to health problems making it hard for us to peg out and fetch in again. We don't have a dishwasher, which I believe can be quite energy hungry, but do run a small chest freezer as well as a built in fridge/freezer.

So I would say your gas sounds reasonable, but the electricity possibly a bit on the high side depending on what you have running on it

ETA: Having had it pointed out that your figures are weekly rather than daily, then I have to say they look very reasonable !!!

That was my initial reaction until I read it properly and realised poppy was talking about units per week. We're a family of six using 13 units of electricity a day and 21 a week sounds wonderful!

I said this last year but here is a reminder. My brother bought me fingerless gloves with a heat pad in last christmas. Just plug them into a USB port and you will have warm hands when typing. Sorry I have no idea where he got them Just don't go to answer the phone in a hurry or you will take the computer with you.

    Now I want some!!!!!!!

oops! yes I missed it was a weekly useage she was quoting -- I'm so used to averaging on a daily basis as my bills are rarely for an exact number of weeks!!!

Having been corrected on that, I have to ask if poppyoscar fancies switching bills with us.......

No room for a spin dryer, plus it uses electric. Reason I was looking at mangles is for the times we have power cuts.

Brilliant things, which I used as a child, but it damn well hurts if you are lax about where your fingers are!

  • Brilliant thread :j !! I seem to be spending all my time reading these posts for the great advice to cut the bills. I have got my old mangle out of the shed (knew it would come in handy one day!) and am now doing more handwashing than using the machine. Would be good if the weather were better to dry it though. What I am looking for is a wash boiler. I used to have a round one with a lid that I think was galvanised. It used to be able to go on the cooker to boil nappies etc but haven't been able to find it since my recent move:cry: Does anyone know where I could get another - or something similar? I have tried ebay and google but no luck.
Birthdays are good for you.... the more you have - the longer you live. :j
