Do you mind my asking where you got it from, eve13? When we had to replace the last washing machine I looked everywhere for a twin tub, I was really disappointed that Hoover no longer made them:( Our washing machine will probably need replacing again soon ( I get through them at a horrendous rate, I have at least 3 or 4 washloads every day) and I would love to be able to get hold of a twin tub.
I found a site that sells them, I don't know if they're as robust as the old twintubs.

For a couple or single person if you're short on space this looks like a dinky little twintub:

I've just seen on GMTV that two OAP's get up at 11pm and do all there cooking, washing, ironing, hoovering etc as they are on a lower rate at night.
Isn't it terrible that people, especially pensioners, are having to do this so they can afford their gas/electric.

oldMacdonald - I'm wonderng how many people in your household? That seems to be an awful lot of washing for you to have to cope with. How on earth do you cope with getting it all dry in this continual wet weather?

It is a lot of washing! There are seven of us, 2 adults and 5 children. One of our children is profoundly disabled and usually has at least one change of bedding a day (often I have to wash his duvet as well), a couple of baths a day (new towel needed each time for hygene reasons!) and a good three or four changes of clothes! He provides me with at least one load a day, usually two! Add to that normal family washing such as clothes, towels, T--towels, bedding etc. and I easily get at least three loads a day!

Drying is dealt with using several strategies! I obsess about the weather forcast and if it is going to be dry the next day I run several loads in the evening so I can get them out on the line early and wash a couple more in the morning. I have two poles put up in the airing cupbaord and hang washing off of them on coat hangers - I can get two loads dry pretty much overnight by this method. Bedding / towels / jeans / large items get thrown over the upstairs banister - as many people on the forum say, the heat rises up the stairwell and items over the banister dry quite quickly. Anything else gets hung off curtain poles in the bedroom with the window opened a crack or dotted about on airers. I can usually get the washing dry within 24 hours if I plan well ahead!!

I'm intrigued by that one (and the alternative it showed me). May have to do some detective work on them, as I regularly end up with bits I need that aren't enough to run the main machine. I have one of the hand operated ones that was mentioned earlier in the thread, but as I have a bad back it's not as easy to operate as it used to be -- and I have to pick and choose which days I risk using it very carefully !

I will never moan about drying clothes again. Hats off to you!

I've got a 1978 Hotpoint, (I had one of these new when I married in 1978) but I don't use all the time. I will use it all the time come the winter when I have oodles of free hot water:j. I got mine from a thrift shop, but you could try asking on freecycle.

If you are buying a new one, it might be worth checking if it has a water heater. A lot of the new ones can only use the water straight from the tap, so you can't start with the delicates and increase the heat as you work through.

oldMcDonald - You deserve a medal coping with all that. And I'm grumbling because our washing machine has given up the ghost and there are only two of us! I shall pray that your washing machine never, ever packs up.

I installed a "shiels maid" in the kitchen. its screwed to the beams above the table as its low ceiling and so doesnt need to rise up or down! anywhere else and we all bag our heads on it. in the sitting room i've screwed cup hooks into the wood slats in the ceiling [ you can find them by knocking the ceiling but beware of electric cables!] and i hang washing off those on coat hangers. i also have a wooden clothes horse which can be placed near the fire but have to never leave it unattended incase one of the cats jumps on ity and knocks it into the fire.

  • Hi oldMacDonald

I got my twin tub from www.harrisclassic.net. It cost 229 inc. postage and arrived within 5 days of ordering it. It was incredibly light, something like 25 kilogrammes so I was able to carry it into the kitchen once I unpacked it. Though as I said made in China so I don't expect it to last as long as any British Brands. Still while it lasts I absolutely love it:beer:
