  • my mum had a mangle, great big things they were. Ok if you have an outhouse but best for sheets and towels

I have had a twin tub and then automatic machines. lol when the auto came out, the release from standing over the washing in the kitchen was fantastic, they also made the kitchen damp and steamy while doing the washing. Ok good on electric and re-use of water and someone has mentioned the curved outlet pipe draped over the sink. I am one of those who had to mop up after the pipe fell off.

In theory, great idea but practically, no way not ever again. While we are at it how about one of these

The sun is going to come out today so I did 3 washing loads last night. All hanging inside and will be dry and put away by late afternoon. Got to take advantage while we can

edit: that is an interesting site for other os stuff

I've got an old photo of my grandad sitting on the back step and you can see my nans washboard propped up against the wall. :)
  • These posts about mangles made me think about watching my gran, mum, auntie etc using them, and that made me think further. Would anyone consider using the dolly tub and posser method for washing clothes? You would have to heat your water of course, but any other power would be elbow grease. No use to me now, my daughter could use one though, I must explain to her what they are! :rotfl:

Of course fabrics are a bit more complex now, so may not suit all clothes, but sheets and towels etc would be ok. Does anyone know if you can still get those little dolly blue things?

You know the men`s shirts and hankies were always snowy white, it might surprise people nowdays what excellent results could be achieved.

I was just looking at that carbolic soap site that Kittie posted about and saw they sell reckitts blue. Is that the same thing?
  • It may be Gigervamp, I must have a look. It is so long ago that I remember anyone using them, they used to be in little twists of paper then I think. They used to be very popular though, most ladies in the village used them, they gave a nice tinge to white things.

  • Apparently, you can buy Reckitts blue in liquid form, I haven`t found that site as yet, but I have come across a site that sells charming repro Reciktts blue adverts that I could put on my kitchen wall.

I remember "blue bags"-my mother thought that it wasn't necessary to use them as they only made the whites look cleaner but my grandmother always used them. Mum and Grandma argued about it for years-probably until they both got automatic washing machines.
  • I have just found a site mentioned on here by Topher, I clicked on the link and that site was a real blast from the past. They not only sell the dolly blue tablets, they sell Pickles ointment and even washing boards!

It was lovely to look at, some of the things I haven`t heard of since I was a child, thanks Gigervamp, and Topher.

I think the idea was that the blue tinge stopped the whites from yellowing, did their whites look any whiter when they were using their machines, bless them?
