    Hi smiley,

I've added your thread to the gas and electricity thread where everyone is discussing how to avoid putting the heating on.

  • Not yet - first I have to go through several other stages...
    1. put on socks
    2. put on extra clothes
    3. add a fleece blanket
    4. add a quilt
    5. add a hot water bottle
    6. PUT THE HEATING ON LOW

So far I'm at stage 1 - i put socks on tonight!

  • This is a long thread - so forgive me if this tip is already on here - but when my son was still sleeping in a wooden cot I used to put a blanket right over the cot making a sort of tent over him - that kept the chill off him at night. Sleeping with socks and a hat and a hot water bottle will ensure that you quickly get warm and stay warm during the night.

  • I have found an old sleeping bag in the loft, I keep it behind the sofa in the lounge and tonight used it and I was very warm. I had deliberated with putting the heating on as it was cold, but resisted. Especially as DH was moaning how cold it was, --- he had on a pair of shorts and no socks. I told him more clothes before we consider heating, so he ended up with the rug that I usually use over his legs.

    Men!!!!!!!!!!
  • Also meant to say, I spend am about to spend a lot of time this winter studying for my Masters, so will be at my computer a lot, I find that sitting in the sleeping bag with it zipped up to my waist is very warm. Saves hving the heating on during the day when I am home.

When I'm working from home (and therefore sitting still most of the time), as well as wearing layers, I usually end up adding sheepskin boots (proper sheepskin, not synthetic - it's worth the money), wristwarmers or fingerless gloves, a scarf of some kind (I use them as accessories a LOT in the winter anyway!) and if it's really chilly a down waistcoat. Heating makes me sleepy when I'm working - and I get very dehydrated.

Yep I can vouch for this... Our computer used to be in the kitchen under the stairs and it got cold in the evenings in winter...

I'd get into the sleeping bag, sit down, tuck my legs under me and even tuck one shoulder into the bag so that just one hand was sticking out, LOL!

    VERY warm and cosy though

Just catching up on this thread and not posted here yet so please forgive me as this has prob been asked lots before.

I am trying not to put heating on as a single parent money is tight...isnt it always! ...anyway i will need to put it on at some point today to dry my washing, will it be cheaper to have heating on very low most of day to get them dry or do a blast of heating for say 1 hour or so?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question!

Its freezing here so for 3/4 of an hour yesterday afternoon I had the two gas heaters on upstairs as low as I could while I had a bath, then switched them off immediately. It took the chill off the bedrooms & bathroom and meant I didn't need to put it on last night ;) I also had to put the fire on in the livingroom - had it on low for an hour or so, but then I had the tumbledrier on to get the washing dry so I switched the fire off and left the kitchen door open so the heat from the tumbledrier warmed the livingroom as well ;)
