if you have a cistern they strongly advise against using the 'hot' water for consumption, as the tank collects a lot of "sludge" over time (like the radiator in a car). not sure what the state of play is with a combi, but I would imagine that would defeat the object as the gas kicks in to heat what you want (and from what I read on here you can have to run quite a bit off before the hot comes through)

  • It's probably ok if you have a water heater directly over the sink, otherwise I'd refrain. I'm lucky, I've got a Sadia Heatrae Multipoint and it's amazingly good at heating the water. I shan't bother installing a hot water system if I can work out how to get a bathful of hot water!!
If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!! :D
  • i won one of these a few months ago but only started using in at the weekend.
according to my owl monitor usage went up by 23p per hour while the kettle was boiling but it boiled enough water for 2 cups (i use a big mug) in 50 seconds so by my reconing thats less than 2p per use. not sure how a normal kettle compares with that.

its a nice kettle very quiet and seems to boil fast but we are boiling less water so it should.;)

    Hi
We bought one of these on Saturday, it's normally just me who uses the kettle, so filling it to just over 1 cup (as I have a big mug lol) is brill.
I dont know how much electric it uses compared to my old one (now sapare one) but as it is save 33% or something it should be saving me something.

The hoover, I had a rug in the living room that took ages to hoover because of the dog hair, but I have taken it up and now I sweep all down stairs, living, kitchen and dining room several times aday, I only need to hoover the landing and 2 bedrooms with the electric hoover.
I have a push along thing that works in my bathroom and my dd1 room, the other bedroom carpets it dont work on
I listen to radio every day but am going to invest in a wind up one

I've recently got a wind-up radio - so am now "training" myself to carry it round the house in the morning whilst getting ready for work - rather than leaving 3 separate electric-powered radios going throughout the house.

One question - I did read subsequently somewheres something about the Government planning to switch off transmission of the standard radio stations at some point before forever - darn them!!!! Is that the case - and, if so, am I going to need more "power" for operating my radio for receiving digital radio stations - or will it be totally useless? I'm hoping I can carry on as per normal and with only a normal amount of winding-up.
  • I am dreading that scenario ceridwen. FM is supposed to be going off and digital will be in. My wind up fm/digital radio goes on for ages on fm and only a few minutes on digital, as digital is so power hungry. Double darn them

I think in terms of 12.5p a unit and boiling two mugs in our kettle costs 0.75p. If the kettle is full, it costs 2p.

Our digital switch-over is in Nov. I would only use a windup radio in a power cut anyway. But I havent got one. LOL I think I need more tea to wake me up !

Our first 'brew' of the day consists of boiling enough water to make 2 cups of tea (which we obviously drink!) and enough 'spare' to fill up a hot water flask which makes another 4 cups throughout the day! I'm no expert but I'm asuming this is the most 'efficient' and cheapest way of doing this rather than boil the kettle each time we make a brew?

Those asking about the digital switchover, the TV ONE is between 2007-2012
The RADIO ONE does not take place until 2015-2020. And that is just provisional - they haven't even starting thinking about how they're going to do it yet. So I wouldn't panic too much ;)

I'm finding the whole kettle-boil debate interesting....we still use a tea-pot & one kettle-full SIZE=1]& 5 t/bags[/SIZE gives enough water to produce at least seven decent mugs of tea. Me muvva still lives independantly & she has an array of smaller teapots that will supply three cups at least & we both use a good, thick cosy to keep the pot warm.

Are we that old fashioned  ?
