the dishwasher is being measured as I write. It is on at 50 and I am very hot and flabbergasted at what I found after I dragged out a cupboard full of stuff looking for the dw socket. You know that space, tucked in at a funny angle under the sink. You wouldn`t believe that state of the kitchen now as everything is all over the floor and table. I have 3 big boxes of washing tablets, unbelievable that I saved so much since I used soapnuts. They would have been well used up by now

The washing machine and fridge are ok to reach so I`ll do them asap. I will probably leave the meter on the fridge socket for at least 24 hours as the kitchen temp fluctuates

 just read an article in this months prima it says someone had a 20 year old fridge which they replaced with a new electrolux one saving her £71 a year in running costs! she discovered that anyone with an appliance over 10 years old should replace it because old ones are far less energy efficient than the new A rated ones and are bad for the environment.

£71!!!!! i thought this was propaganda put about by the manufacturers to trick us into buying new white goods.

my freezer is 20+years old and my larder fridge was brought 2nd hand about ten years ago so lord only knows what they are costing me to run if this is true.

the prima article im quoting is from the sept issue and on page 60. theres a big spread about saving during the credit crunch

  • Try not to 'overheat' the water in your immersion heater. What I mean is there is really nothing you do in the house that requires boiling water so if it's IS boiling you usually need to cool it down with cold water (I'm thinking of when you have a wash/wash the dishes etc). Having to add cold water to your hot water means you have wasted fuel. Lag the immersion tank really well and your partially heated water will remain luke warm (enough for most household chores) for hours. Only a small tip but every little helps.

Another one which is probably common sense. It's much cheaper to have your washing on a very high spin speed than dragging them out of the washer wringing wet and relying on the tumble drier to get them dry. If you are in the market for a new washer, try and get one that is A rated and the fastest spin speed you can afford.

I am shocked. DW is finished and these are the accurate costings for a 50 degree wash for a full load
    13.5 pence energy
    15 pence detergent
4 pence for 30 litres water

total is 32.5 pence per load
I did one load almost every evening.

Just taking energy and detergent that is £26 a quarter and just the energy is £12.28 a quarter

gordon bennett!! I`m going to be very selective about using the dw from now on

I priced the energy for a pot of tea for 2 and it is under 1p :D

yes an electric kettle. Mardatha just keep them somewhere as part of your survival kit. We are bound to have power cuts
  • Using the Maplin plug-in usage monitor, I have priced the exact electric usage for making a a one and a half pound loaf in our MR Breadmaker (we get the Hovis ready made bread mix from Asda for a very cheap 29p, just add water and a spoonful of vegetable oil) and it's come out at a surprisngly cheap 4p on both occasions (based on 12p per kw charge). A really nice Hovis loaf for 33p total! I also got 1p for 2 cups boiled in the kettle.

If your a person that likes baths, make sure you fill the bath up with cold water first, then add the hot water, it takes less hot water to heat it up at this point rather than filling it with hot water first then cooling it down with cold water.

The washing machine: 30 degree cotton wash (D) took 70 minutes and cost 1.39 pence in energy. I don`t know how much water at 0.13 a litre

much better value than the dish washer, which has been wiped dry and left empty
