 just read an article in this months prima it says someone had a 20 year old fridge which they replaced with a new electrolux one saving her £71 a year in running costs! she discovered that anyone with an appliance over 10 years old should replace it because old ones are far less energy efficient than the new A rated ones and are bad for the environment.

£71!!!!! i thought this was propaganda put about by the manufacturers to trick us into buying new white goods.

my freezer is 20+years old and my larder fridge was brought 2nd hand about ten years ago so lord only knows what they are costing me to run if this is true.

the prima article im quoting is from the sept issue and on page 60. theres a big spread about saving during the credit crunch

All true. My new fridge freezer uses 286 kwh per year! :j

Yep - the new fridge/freezer I have just got says it uses 385 kwh per year if my memory serves me aright:D Its A+ rating - which was a bit difficult to get - as there arent many of them around yet. The norm at present is still A. I did read one can get A++ ones (cant say I have spotted any of them at all!).

What is a bit confusing is that even when comparing one A rated fridge/freezer with another A rated one that they have different energy usage. I sorta assumed all those in the same rating band would use the same amount of power - duh! So - its not just sufficient to check any new appliance one buys has the correct rating - one still has to compare with others to check that out as well.

Got through the post today a brochure on multi fuel stoves....they have a few at around £250-£350, some of which have a LIFETIME guarantee.... wish I had got one while I was still working. :( We have the big one in the living room, but could do with a baby one in the back kitchen.

    Great thread,just found it!
I'd like to say we are installing a wood burner very soon
Just brought 2 tonne of logs and a cast iron casserole for some hot stews, can't wait . The guy said we won't be able to sit in the room, bring it on!

  • I had to post this, and I promise to make it shorter than last time! A few days ago I worked out I had used mearly £200 in elec in two months, so I tried to work out where it was all going. I noticed that the immersion tank had been switched to on (and has been since we moved intwo years ago:eek: ) and is on 24/7. This is in addition to our water being heated by the gas boiler two hours per day.

Cut a lng story short, have switched off both the boiler and the immersion tank. WE STILL HAVE ~HOT BLOODY WATER!!!!! (though getting a bit cooler, still useable) and our leccy has geon down from £2.90 per day to £1.08 per day. I am flabbergasted!

Thanks to this great thread, cos it was reading this that got me thinking bout it all. Drinks all round

I think I've already posted this somewhere on the forum, but my brain's so dopey I may have only thought about it and not written it, so please forgive me.:o

Something we never really thought about was the broadband hub being plugged in constantly. Now it's unplugged when it's not in use. Don't know what effect this'll have on bills, but surely it can't hurt.

  • Actually scuzz it all helps. My husband has bleated a bit about "wearing it out" (lol) switching it on and off, but ours gets turned off, along with every other lec device in the house.

You can tell your husband that as you have to switch if off for 20 mins if you get a problem with the connection, it's good for it to have a rest every so often, and you're actually extending it's life :D

I'm replacing my dishwasher this weekend, and as I've been lent a plug-in meter thought I'd check how much it used before getting rid of it. It's about 20 years old (I think I'm the third owner!) and used 1.65kwH for a load. I thought it would be more. But I'm getting rid of it because it doesn't wash very well anymore.

I have thought about getting rid of the dishwasher, but if I don't use it, the washing up stacks up everywhere as I hate doing it! So now I fill it as full as I possibly can to make sure I get value for money from it when I do use it.
