Hi guys
Can anyone please settle an argument with my OH for me
He washes up every night using fairy liquid (everything else makes his hands funny and dont even ask about gloves LOL)
The water is heated instantly through our boiler so no emersion
We also have a dishwasher. Its 1 1/2 years old and does a cycle in 1 1/2 hours but I get free dishwashing tablets so theres no cost there
Which would we be cheaper to do, by hand or dishwasher
I guess with the diswaher we would only need it on every other day as well as its a 12 place setting
ThanksMad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
Aiming to loose 56 pounds this year. Total to date 44.5 pounds 12.5 to go. Slimming World Rocks!0 -

Grin!
Wasn't meant as an insult. I know there is more to life than sitting at home around your water bottles in the dark and saving up to pay the next bill.
However I see so often people who struggle to pay the bills, end up on lower tariffs which are subsidised by those who do prioritize more, and they have the biggest TV, full sky package and drinking and smoking etc etc.
Not found anyone with a butler yet though!
something I've just done which I mentioned in another thread is to swap the supply of my hot water cylinder over.
It's a dual element cylinder, the lower is on the Economy 7 supply and heats the 160Lires of water over night. The upper is never used - it's on the "standard tariff" and is for "emergencies" I guess.
Well I swapped them over so the upper now comes on overnight, and gives us around 50lires of hot water. We still don't use it all, and it must be a good saving as we are not heating 160Litres every day now0 -
Dont worry Viper, didnt take it as an insult! We are all here to save a bit of cash. I am not behind with any of my bills and have enough money to pay them. I am one of the lucky ones! However, I would like to be able to reduce the amount of money I waste to put towards something I really want, rather than continue to waste it if you know wot I mean
, hence I am reading everyone's tips on this forum avidly. Saved a bomb already on groceries this year (and took the kids on holiday with the savings), the money I will save from heating my hot water twice (:o ) will probably pay for Christmas this year, I kid you not.
I do have Sky :rotfl: but we have reduced our package by half, and my treat is a bottle of beer or cider every week. (that is a small bottle, not a 2l thingey). No fags. My big luxury is my three lovely spaniels, and would sooner get rid of the kids than them :eek:0 -

A few days ago I worked out I had used mearly £200 in elec in two months, so I tried to work out where it was all going. I noticed that the immersion tank had been switched to on (and has been since we moved intwo years ago:eek: ) and is on 24/7. This is in addition to our water being heated by the gas boiler two hours per day.
Cut a lng story short, have switched off both the boiler and the immersion tank. WE STILL HAVE ~HOT BLOODY WATER!!!!! (though getting a bit cooler, still useable) and our leccy has geon down from £2.90 per day to £1.08 per day. I am flabbergasted!
Thanks to this great thread, cos it was reading this that got me thinking bout it all. Drinks all round

I've noticed that a few people have commented on immersion heaters and/or gas hot water systems. Have you ever had your thermostats checked? IF they're working properly, they shouldn't 'kick in' until the water temp drops below the thermostat level - when I had an immersion installed about 18 years ago, the electrician asked me what I wanted the thermo setting at.
Now we have a combi-boiler - brilliant as there is no tank of water to be heated up and then go cold (or run out when the washing machine/bath is filled up!). Just hot water 'on tap' (pun definitely intended  ) - I just make sure that I set the temp at what I need to wash the dishes without needing to add cold water (also not hot enough to scald dgkids hands!).
For really hot water for mopping floors, I fill the bucket from the tap and then add a kettle-full of boiling water or I could turn the thermo UP, fill the bucket and then turn it back down again preferably BEFORE I forget.

The only downside for me is that I no longer have a water tank in what used to be the airing cupboard, as I used to dry most of the washing in there - I'll certainly miss it this winter. However, if it makes some considerable saving on my quarterly gas bill, then I can live with that0 -
Cancel the Sky subscriptions, stop smoking/drinking, and you'll have plenty of money for the bills.
Priorities.
If only it was that easy:rolleyes:
Don't make assumptions that everyone has these things. I don't even have a TV, don't smoke have a drink or two a the weekend but that is at home and using economy lemonade as a mixer.
I have a disabled husband home nearly all day everyday and I work 3 days a week as I am not happy with him being at home on his own as I don't feel that he is safe.
Think I will getting husband to use his free bus pass to go down the library and spend all day there keeping warm when I am at work :rotfl:
Also thermals all round.

Don't have sky, don't smoke, only drink cheap (£1.99 maximum cost) wine once a month.Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
I'm just starting to wonder about my immersion heater. At the moment, it's on 24/7, but only on a fairly low temp - 40 degrees. Is it more economical to leave it on all the time, so it only has to keep the water at a constant temperature, or only turn it on when I know I'm going to want it, but so it has to heat the water up from cold?0
