For anyone thinking about the window film, I bought some from Wilkinsons last year and did our porch windows - made loads of difference. Well worth the cost (can't remember how much but it wasn't a lot). Will be doing loft window as well this year.

Also, on UK hotdeals there is a link to Woolworths for some cream soft fleecy throws for £2.99 (from £9 - free delivery) and I've sent for some of those. Might be worth a look for anyone else who needs any.
  • I'm only new here so this may have already be one here and you'll all groan but when I was at school, we had a lady, i think from british gas, come to teach all of us doing home economics a few money saving tips.
Now I can't remember it all (wouldn't be here if I did lol) but she did say if ever you are reheating veggies, ie a tin on peas or beans etc, at the same time as cooking dinner in the over, just pop the tin opened of course, on the bottom/floor of the oven and they'll be ready when dinner is. Saves using the hob.

Remembered this when I did dinner last night, and it works, though I did put the beans in a pyrex dish.

Has anyone any experience of using a solar oven? I was reading about them in the Tight Wad Gazette last night where she provides instructions for making one? I wonder if they'd even work in this climate? Just curious really.

I read somewhere that just having a thingie/gizmo in the house usually brings about approx 40% reduction in leccy use. When I am not being silly and switching everything on "just to show it who's boss" :o:o:o I can see how that would be - I am switching things off left right and centre :D and have stopped leaving the pc on all day. I get more done too as I can't "just check a couple of blogs" as I pass by

I know EXACTLY what you mean.....I've been prowling round the house writing a list of things to test, then fighting myself NOT to put them on just so I can see how much they cost!:o

Meanwhile....I have three readings for the dishwasher:-

    quick wash = 8.16p
    eco wash = 11.13p
    normal wash = 15.42p

    soooooo :eek::eek::eek::eek: for the dishwasher!

When you get brave tell us what the PC costs for an Hour and I'll use it to shame the kids....

My 16 year old spends his every waking moment on the computer, and I asked him not to to save money - so he took to sitting in the dark instead "to save money..." I wouldn't mind but he had a low energy light bulb!!!

    Regards

It's a worry isn't it!!!! I'm going to make him pay for the internet out of his EMA in September (and the proceeds of his part time job) - otherwise it might have been on the 'it will have to go' list. He might have to pay for the TV license too :)

I gave up using my dishwasher about October last year to save electricity, AND the cost of all the powder/rinse aids etc. No comparison to a bottle of 'savers' washing up liquid every month at about 16p!!!!

I've ALMOST forgotten what it was like to have a dishwasher ;)

    Regards

Can anyone recommend a wind-up lantern?I have been looking at a few on Amazon, but they don't always get very good reviews.Either they are flimsily made or they don't give much light out.

I thought I could use it during the winter months instead of switching the electric light on while watching TV,so I'm not sitting in the dark. Not that I really mind sitting in the dark, but it would save me tripping over things when I can't see where I am going :rotfl:
