Just a list of things we have done.

    - we had the loft and walls insulated free after a man came to the door about it
    - we've got a big lined curtain over the front door and window
    - we don't have a tumble drier, but 2 big clothes horses
    - throws, throws and more throws over the seats
    - energy saving ligt bulbs apart from the main sitting room 3 light, which has 3 x 25 wott bulbs in and is on a dimmer switch
    - we don't put the fire on, but sometimes we put the lights on as you feel wamer!
    - when I put the heating on we get baths, do the dishes and dry the clothes on them, so we feel we are getting our moneys worth!
    - I pay for my phone and internet by DD as it saves around £25 a year, could also save £1.50 a month by stopping a paper bill and changing to email (but I need a paper bill)
    - Never ring anyone before 6pm, I always wait till it's free
    - We have a strip light in the kitchen as these are cheaper to run apparantly
    - If you have a pet and it's on your knee you grab it's heat!
    - And the cheekiest - visit people around meal times and outstay your welcome (use their food and heating lol), only do this with my parents so it's ok!
£200 saved for baby things :T

Wind up Lantern. Don't know whether they're still available but back in January we bought a great multi-purpose wind-up lantern from Woolworths reduced to £15 from £30. It's combines window up lantern which stays on permanently or flashing, a wind-up radio/compass, a mobile phone charger, a mosquito buzzer. So we're now OK for listening to the radio with a light on during a power cut, if the mosquitos are buzzing around! They had them on offer on their website too at the time - possibly worth checking if they're still available.
PS Yes, still showing on their website (Google Wind up Lantern Woolworths) but says it's currently not available. Check later. Perhaps worth checking in your local branch.

Can anyone recommend a wind-up lantern?I have been looking at a few on Amazon, but they don't always get very good reviews.Either they are flimsily made or they don't give much light out.

I thought I could use it during the winter months instead of switching the electric light on while watching TV,so I'm not sitting in the dark. Not that I really mind sitting in the dark, but it would save me tripping over things when I can't see where I am going :rotfl:

not quite the same thing but someone in the past mentioned using the solar lights from the garden (putting them in plant pots). along those lines B&Q are selling solar shed lights (think about £13 each) if you have a way to feed the wire into your living room they can apparently provide about 6 hours of light when charged. not sure how well it would work in the winter though

If you're in the habit of leaving your computer on all day, don't forget that the FUNCTION button + F4 will send it to sleep, in the Doze mode, which uses less power. Simply press FUNCTION + F4 again to bring it back to life.

Temperature of cold tap water is 15C. Summertime temperature of my house is 25C. Allow water to stand in pan or kettle absorbing "free" heat and it costs less to boil it. Equivalent to 1 free boiling in every 7.5 pan/kettles.

Put butter and milk straight back in the fridge after using it - it costs money to re-chill warmed things.

Think ahead and defrost your frozen joint in the fridge. It takes longer but will help cool the fridge.

primrose is that the same as hibernate? Hibernate is the button top left and fn has to be pressed, marked fn (bottom left on the right of ctrl)

    F4 doesn`t work for me

oo that worked. I had to press the start button and it still has to partly boot up and connect to wireless. Maybe standby is better

standby works and is quicker than hibernate. Came back to life when I pressed the start button. Thanks primrose, I have never done that before
