Well, so far, so good. Washing machine smells fine and I forgot I left a load in overnight that had finished washing and the clothes smell fine also. The overpowering perfume smell from the product has almost disappeared so that's good. Hopefully that's an end to the problem and I'll maintain my washer with vinegar and soda crystals and 90 degree washes as usual.
I use this product every 3 months and I find it's really good. I know it's more expensive than vinegar or soda crystals, but if it keeps the machine going for longer - and doesn't damage it - it will save me money in the long run (that's the theory anyway!)
PS Yes, the perfume quickly disappears, I've found.0 -
Sorry if this is a dull question but where should I put the vinegar if i want to do what you guys have suggested?
In the washing liquid bit? or fabric conditioner bit? or in the machine itself?
TIA

I have been doing mine today. I used the 13p bottles of vinegar from Asda.
Tipped the whole bottle in the washing machine and did a hot wash with the time saver on so about 1 hour.
Then I descaled my kettle with half a bottle + water and left for a couple of hours. I tend to boil up the mixture taking care to switch it off as the level comes up.(otherwise it can go everywhere) I may do this a couple of times if the kettle is very scaly. It came up a treat. I saved that water and vinegar.
Then the saved vinegar and water + the rest of the 13p bottle went in the bottom of the dishwasher and got a good clean out.
Not bad for 26p in all.
You could also use the kettle water to clean the loo.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

HI there - have seen some fab ideas and advice on here and wondered if you knowledgable people could help me out.
Came down to washing machine today and when I opened the door it didnt smell very nice (kids said like turnip lol).
Anyway DH put some cleaning stuff in it and set it away - (its supposed to clean the machine) however it still doesnt smell good - do any of you have any better/cheaper/old style ways of cleaning your washer?

I found putting it through a hot wash cycle, empty, with malt vinegar freshens it. I never wash anything very hot, so think this probably sterilises it a little.
edit: edit: correction, white not malt.
Can I ask if people who wash things on hot washes regularly get this problem too? Just curious.0 -
Hi Pinky15,
These earlier threads should help:

how to clean mildewy rim on washing machine?

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

Soda crystals on a 90c wash with an empty machine once a month.
Although if you have an older machine, and this is the first time you have used a cleaning product, the cleaner may have released everything that has built up over time and a second dose of cleaner may do the trick. It is also possible the smell is coming from the drainage itself and is not caused by your washer. For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

Our old machine used to pong, so I'd do an empty wash, hottest cycle, and used white vinegar (not malt!), then I'd do another empty wash on the hottest cycle again with some soda crystals in the drum.
Wipe all in and around the plastic seal too, as gunge doesn't half build up over it and can smell something rotten!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
