  • Try checking the waste outlet pipe has a bend in it at the right height to prevent the machine syphoning back dirty water as this too will give off a pong. Also giving the door seal a wipe round after use will stop slime forming and prolong the life of the seal.
    Hope this helps.

Not to forget the water pump that empties the machine. Thes sometimes have a removable cover in case any foreign bodies get in the machine and it needs removing. Sometimes there is an access panel for it on the front of the machine.

There's a few possible causes. Main two I can think of because I've encountered them before are:

Do you use fabric softener? Every time someone puts that in the washing machine it ends up slimy, growing mould and smelling like a bin that needs emptying. Bad stuff, it's basically oil of some type that's designed to deposit on stuff, we avoid it now and have a much fresher washing machine and washing.

Have you cleaned out the trap yet? If it's full of crud you'll have a load of old water sitting in the machine between uses.
No I only use the 2 in one types of fabric con/soap powder
Thanks for that I didnt evan think of that one, Ahh nice job for Hubby and if he floods the kitchen floor then it will be ok;)

  • After you have followed the advice above run your machine empty on it's hottest longest cyle, put a mug of vinegar in the drawer to help break down any gunge that may have built up in the machine.

Thanks I knew there was something old style but couldnt/didnt remember what it was VINEGAR I had the hunch it was soda crystals

Soda crystals degrease, vinegar descaled so use either or both

Over the past few weeks I've tried all the remedies mentioned in this thread several times over, with no success. The washing machine does smell fresher immediately after the treatment but the smell is back the next day. This morning the laundry smelt when it came out of the machine (and the smell was also noticable in the hall and part way up the stairs!) so perhaps it's time to consider a new machine. In a final act of desperation I've just emptied a small drain-off tube and checked the filter, along with the waste pipe - no problems found. The door seal has a 3" x 1/2" black mark that resists removal (but the machine's six years old now and so some marks on the door seal are perhaps inevitable) but otherwise the door seal is clean. The washing machine is sited next to the sink and the sink waste smells fresh enough. Most days I do two or three loads of washing, with one at 60C every other day, so the machine should be clean enough. Is there any way forward with this or should I accept that it's time for a new washing machine?

Have you tried cleaning out the seal? Mine has a really deep fold that catches a load of gunk and smells awful after a few months. Rubber gloves and paper towel time!

Yes mine`s exactly the same, bit of a design fault i think!
