You're supposed to leave the door slightly ajar to allow air to circulate.

Pull back the rubber door trim and there will probably be a build up of filth and scum in there that is causing the smell.

I always leave the door slightly open so it doesn't get that musty damp smell. I agree with previous poster its probably gunk thats built up in the rim at the bottom of the door sealI always pull the rim back and wipe with a cloth to keep it as dry as possible.A machine mechanis said that it was the way to ensure that the rubber doesn't perish too quickly as well if you can keep it dry and clean after every wash.Takes two seconds to wipe clean and my washer is 10 years old and I've not had to have a new door seal since I had the machine.
  • Oooh I am shocking at this :( mine is disgusting :o this may make me get off my bum today & give my machine a bit of tlc, are there any great tips for those of us (or just me) that have not looked after their machine??

I always leave my door open and run the machine empty on a really hot wash with soda crystals and vinegar once a week - And yes I always wipe the door seal after every wash and my machine is 9 years old ( I am lucky enough to have a friend who is a wm engineer who puts new bearings in once a year and keeps everything running for me)
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

make sure the rubber seal is clean and wiped out. Then put your machine on a 90 degree wash with 2 ariel bio tablets empty without clothes. Works every time :j

When my machine is not in use I take out the drawer and leave it out till the next wash.

    Hi all,
Got a musty smelling machine and know it's not the pipework.
    Musty smell in machine.
Have cleaned the liquid/fab con tray and underneath.
Do you keep the door open or shut when the machine is not in use in order to prevent a musty smell?
    Many thanks.

Have you cleaned the filter out? Should be a little door at the bottom front of the machine (on most machines if not look at your instructions). Make sure you have a bowl and some towels as some water will come out when you pull the filter out
  • I usually leave door open, but machine isnt in kitchen, so doesnt get in the way. I run it through empty every so often on a hot wash, with soda crystals and vinegar, and I do wipe round the door seal and wash the drawer out regualarily. No problems with any smell. As someone else suggested, a hot wash and wipe round might do the trick.

soda crystals won't do the trick, a washine machine repair man told me that ariel bio powder or tablets are the best as they contain top quality enzymes, these will eat the bacteria. soda crystals won't do that according to him.

Hope this helps, I do a regular maintenance empty hot wash once a month with ariel bio and the smell is gorgeous in my washer, really clean!! I know they're expensive but sometimes I think you do get what you pay for ;)

Can you tell I'm obsessed with washing an washing machines lol ? :rotfl:
  • musty smell? never noticed it with mine, suppose the fabric conditioner masks it lol...............

We never get a musty smell as the thing is hardly ever off lol. Mind with 4 kids plus us two its virtually a load a day just for the basic clothes and what with uniforms and changes of clothes (espcially for the little ones) it really mounts up.

However I agree with keeping the door open in between washes, plus washing out the powder drawer every so often. Also worth emptying the filter at the bottom as sitting water can get trapped there and could produce a musty smell.
