some rally great tips in this thread - thanks.
Will look for the elusive filter over the weekend and wash out the drawer. Think I'll try the vinegar rinse as well. Why not go for it all!
I usually do all my washing on 40 degrees, but this morning put on a wash at 60 degrees as it contained white table cloths that were really grimey looking.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
Frizz head - you just use the softener as you would normal softner. I put it in the old softner bottle and use the lid as a measure.
2 parts vinegar; 2 parts bicarb; 4 parts water; 2 or 3 drops of essential oil (I use tea tree). Mix over the sink because it will fizz. I give it a shake before I use it each time.
No, it doesn't smell of chips. My Hubby has a big nose and can smell vinegar a mile off and he hasn't noticed (he doesn't know I use it)
R.Mac - the filter is usually that plastic door on the front that you kick but don't know what it does. Pull it off and you'll find a screw top underneath. Unscrew that and loads of yucky gunk will come out. When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
shanni wrote:I always keep the door ajar (sometimes wide open) but if I don't there's a terrible damp water smell. I've sprayed it with bleach and poured neat bleach inside the rubber rimand then washed through empty but it still smells bad. I use it at least 3 times a week. Any ideas how to get rid of the smell? It might be the water that collects in the rubber rim but I can't tell for sure.
Thanks
Thanks for posting this! I thought it was just me and my poor housekeeping skills that had led to my stinky washing machine!Haven't read through all the suggestions yet but will definitely be going through them!

I read this thread and it inspired me to clean my machine too!
I did the gunky drawer and then went off in search of the filter. *Oh look, it's just right there but I'd never noticed it before*. I unscrewed it with cloth at the ready to catch all the slime. And nothing!!! Hubby appeared and asked what I was doing. I told him and he said 'I do it every few weeks thats why its clean!'.

I can't see a filter on the front of my machine
Its an Ariston AWD 12 (about a year old) so if anyone knows where the filter is (if it has one) please speak up! I've also just insepcted the powder drawer (funny how we don't take notice when using it) and it's all slimy from fabric conditioner ... ewwwwwwwww ... but it isn't removable so I'm gonna have to try to clean it in situ
My Tesco delivery has just been so I'm now armed with soda crystals, bicarb and white vinegar and about to do a mass clean-up
Should I run this stuff through without any clothes in, or will it still work whilst doing a wash? (son's dirty footie kit needs doing!)"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

I've recently moved into rented accommodation, and the washing machine there smells really bad! I don't meant the drains, though - it's the drum itself. If it isn't used for more than 24 hours, the smell gets really bad, and clothes come out smelling strongly of something like garlic. I have to wash clothes twice to get rid of the smell! I've tried adding extra washing powder, and using longer, hotter washes, but nothing seems to help.
Any ideas? I know it's nothing to do with the plumbing. Water gets trapped in the plastic seal next to the door of the drum, so i mop that up after every wash, as it gets mouldy otherwise. Don't know what else to do.
Thanks
