  • As far as the economy goes I have a 1.3CDTI Corsa on a 54 plate - done 57,000 miles now - the car returns about 45-50mpg driving around town and the odd run a bit further, and obviously a lot more cruising on the motorway.

My car... A VX Vectra 04 plate gets 28-36mpg.

But let me ask you this!!!

4 year old small car (eg Yaris) = £6500
4 year old large car (eg Vectra) = £3000

    Small car 38-46mpg
    Large car 28-36mpg

Do you really save money by buying a small car?
Would you save the difference (£3500) on Petrol? I think not...

I don't care what mileage I get, because I still save money and ended up with a better equipped car for my money.

What about insurance? A Vectra is group 7 to 14, whereas a Corsa is 1 to 9.

Once you're 25+ with some NCB it makes little difference, and it often doesn't work the way you think, strangely enough.
I entirely agree with Strider's theory. Big older cars are cheaper than little econoboxes now that everyone's obsessed with green nonsense and petrol prices are through the roof.

I get 42.5mpg in my 1999 Hyundai Accent 1.3. That's mostly motorways (where I stick at about 65 to save fuel) & 60mph A roads, with a little bit of heavy traffic inner city driving as well. Most days I drive 30 miles a day.

    Citroen C2 1.4 HDi. 60mpg winter, 66 mpg summer.
Mostly country roads/trunk roads averaging 50-60mph for 60 miles a day.

Probably drops to about 55mpg if I do some town driving.

    Insurance groups are meaningless.....

The whole system needs a revamp. The Vectra is group 7, my last car was group 14.... The Vectra was worth less and cost more to insure, I had to fork out nearly £90 over the previous car.

A Subaru Impreza owner (group 20) pays a lot less insurance than a Bugatti Veyron owner (group 20).

Have you tried a good service recently, or at least a new air filter, oil change, check spark plugs? And also the usual remove excess weight from car, check tyre pressures, brake less, accelerate smoother, don't coast in neutral blah blah

Tends to be a false economy driving small engine cars, they have to be driven much harder to keep up with traffic flow.

I think it was Top Gear who put a BMW M5 (the fast one) against a small hatchback in fuel economy test, BMW driven at a normal casual pace and the other car driven at the exact same speed..... In the end the big M5 gas guzzler did more MPG.

But being top gear no doubt there was an element of bias to prove the point they wanted to prove. I doubt the test was to traverse central London.
