Surely even UW reps will accept that the intent of the restrictive conditions, which are buried in the small print, is to ensure that many customers will inadvertently fail to qualify for the offer.

Can we have the source for these quotes please Q, otherwise they don't mean anything! Can you provide a link?

  • Irrespective of if the T&C are reasonable ,if whoever signed the customer up told the customer they would get a £100 credit after 12 months ,and the UW representative or UW failed to give the customer the T&C, then UW still dont have a leg to stand on.

As I said and you acknowledge, I don't have any knowledge of past offers.

I also have no problem admiting if that was the case back then, it does seem totally unfair and I would have been just as angry.

In the current booklets we have to give new customers, it does actually state the basics in the small print and that the full T&C's are in the membership book they are sent later. So it would appear that the complaints were listened to and acted upon.

It does depend on each persons (rep's) own style as to what they say to each customer. I'm the type of person that does explain these sorts of details. I also ask people to read and check what they are about to sign before they sign it. Everyone so far has just said they can't be bothered to read the detail and they just sign. That's their choice.

Personally, I scan read stuff initially and only in more detail if I'm confused or looking for particular information. However, by scan reading, I do miss important info. I know that and accept it. If I can't find what I'm looking for, I ask. That's the type of person I am.

So, regardless of what it is, with whichever company, it still all comes down to each of us to know exactly what we're signing up for at the time and then abide by those conditions and accept our own actions, or lack of as the case maybe. If you can't find what you're looking for in what's been provided, then ask for more information.

I meant to say in my last post that altho I feel you (Quentin) are extra-ordinarily negative about UW, you do make some very good contributions in your other posts. Just lighten up here on this subject. Several people have commented, not just me. I would recommend you just say "In my opinion ..." rather than your current approach of constant negative attack and telling people what they should do or not. It's up to them once they have all the details to make their own decisions.

Cardew - nice lightly worded comment. That's exactly the reason I lost out with that other energy company; the detail was buried. Back then (about 8 years ago I think) I didn't read the T&C's, I didn't look for the conditions until it was too late because I also hadn't diarised it. I placed my trust in whoever I spoke to, to tell me what I needed to know. They didn't give me the minute details and I didn't ask. All but one of those reasons were my fault, no-one elses. Even so, I was very angry at the time.

No actually. I had never heard of the site until I set up a Google alert to see what was happening on the net in connection to UW. I have several different alert topics set up, this was just one of them and it brought me here.

I don't usually respond to any comments on any sites but some of the arguments on this forum are just so ridiculously negative, they made me respond.

However, I have been using the site since initially finding it to look up info for my own use, eg solar panels.

I think the site is very good and I have a lot of respect for Martin Lewis. Loved his tv programs.

I think the forums in general are very good because none of us can think of everything, so many minds can make life that little bit easier.

Is this meek acceptance of the uw ruling your own personal advice to Blusox's problem, or your company's advice?

Either way he should ignore it, make an official complaint to uw about being denied his cashback then if that fails use the ombudsman service, pointing out that the hoop jumping meter reading requirements are unfair, and weren't pointed out to him at the time the offer was taken out.
  • I have been following these threads for years. Not daily, but just dip in for a bit of a giggle every so often.

As ever a small army of UW reps defiantly defend the company who pay them money to promote the product.

Every so often a new "customer" appears asking a question.

People like Quentin and Cardew have made it their mission to correct what they see as inaccuracies.

UW reps accuse them of being bitter.

UW rep: The sky is yellow!

Quentin: No it is not, it is blue.

UW rep: but the sky is yellow!

Quentin: No it is not, look up, it is blue.

Spurious new joiner: Hi, I am a new to this thread. My cousin who is trying to make me sign up for a new utility package has told me it is a good deal because the sky is actually yellow.

UW rep: yes it is! Very yellow! In fact in July a survey found that 96% of people who look up at 6pm on a Tuesday find the sky to be yellow!

    Spurious new joiner: Wow!

Quentin: The sky is blue. Look up. It is blue. It has always been blue. That is the colour of the sky.

UW rep: Stop being so bitter Quentin. What does it matter to you what colour the sky is?

Quentin: it does not matter, but the sky is blue!

UW rep: well people will just have to look up and make their own mind up. Most of my clients are very happy believing the sky is yellow because they get everything on one bill.

Quentin: But the sky is blue

T&Cs *This post makes no regard for the sky appearing to be red in the evening or black at night.

And off we go, for another five years!
