melbury wrote:Yes, have just checked the BG site prices again and worked it out as follows:
Paying by DD
Tier 1 First 4572 kwh per annum @ 5.207 per unit (inc VAT) = 238.06
Tier 2 31,428 kwh @ 2.941 per unit (inc VAT) = 924.29
Total for a year at current price £1162.35
36,000 kwh per annum with EBICO @ 2.55 per unit (inc VAT) £918.00
Total saving for the year is a massive £244.35
Your arithmetic is not in dispute, and you have used the prices in the DD payment table.
However you have either not seen or ignored this statement which is on the same page:
"Gas customers paying by Monthly Direct Debit will receive a discount off their quarterly consumption charges of 10.3%, up to a maximum of £18.25 (including VAT) per quarter"
So that reduces your saving by up to £73 a year and is why I had asked if you had factored in the DD discount.
You could get another massive £5 a year for paperless billing.
Or you could opt for BT Click Energy where the gas prices are 3.325/2.553p
I am not in any way trying to knock Ebico for they appear to be an excellent company with a straightforward tariff.
However there is a tendancy on this Board to take the most expensive tariff they can find(and we all agree that is BG Standard tariff for Gas) and use that for their comparison on how much they are saving.0 -

Sorry Cardew, I really had not noticed that before - obviously so shocked at the prices I didn't bother with the small print. I agree, my saving has been knocked back by £73, but I am still ahead - unless anyone knows differently!!!!Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
Most of the switching sites are offering £15 cashback if you change via them.
Ebico seems to be left out.
I think this tells a story about these sites and the amount of backhanders they are getting from the big suppliers to push their companies.
Ebico doesn`t pay the sites anything and so they are not being promoted.
Now that Ebico has announced their prices from 1st Sept I have at long last decided to go with them from Pgen.0 -

Not quite, your original estimate of savings was £228, I checked on UKpower who gave a yearly consumption figure of £1144 BG - £918 Ebico £226 difference & I replied saying you would save £226 accordingly.
Then Cardew pointed out the DD discount, I checked the figures and it turns out UKpower was wrong and had only taken into account 1 DD saving of £18.25
So I went to energyhelpline, they gave results BG £1089 Ebico £918 saving £171 They have used a deduction of 4 lots of £18.25 to arrive at this figure.
melbury's first estimate has therefore been knocked back by £57 not £73, and I (or rather UKpower) was £55 out.
But we're still not finished! because it is 10.3% to a maximum of £18.25 per quarter. I have estimated that melbury uses 4000 - 5000 in the summer months, and so there is still the possibility that during summer the discount may be £1 - £3 less. which can be taken off melbury's £57 and ukpowers £55.0 -

Melbury,
I agree that it is in the very small print and easy to miss. I wonder that something that is a substantial money saver isn’t emblazoned across the page!
Actually the DD savings on BG will probably be a little less than £73 unless your bill every quarter is approx £180 or more; and even using 36,000 kWh I doubt if your summer bill will be that high.(10.3% discount each quarter up to £18.25)
So using current tariffs you are ahead of BG on standard tariff(everyone is!) but behind other firms using their current tariffs.
The point I have been making in a number of threads is that it is an ever changing situation and what is good advice today might turn out to have been poor advice tomorrow. (On advice from people whose judgement I trusted, I bought a Betamax VCR, took out an Endowment mortgage at the wrong time, and blew a huge sum on a really good slide rule – just as Sinclair? introduced the pocket calculator)
I do get a little frustrated with some people on this forum who go so readily to print with authoritative statements and unequivocal advice when they are just guessing.
The discussion across several threads last year on the merits of BG’s fixed to April 2010 tariff was a good example. It was clearly a gamble to pay more to fix your prices. However if you read the threads you will see many contributors absolutely adamant that you would be stupid to go on that tariff – absolutely no balance in their posts. I went on the tariff and at current rates would be saving £250 over Ebico’s rates(my slide rule said £2,500!) Now that could change and I still have taken the wrong course. However if I were a betting man I would wager that by April 30th 2010 Ebico’s prices will be higher than their current tariff.0 -
Wig,
Our posts crossed re the £73 discount. You did notice that I said "up to £73" in my first post?0 -
I have just got the weekly email and saw Ebico prices increased. But checked on USwitch and I seem to still be on the cheapest package, so still sticking with them.
However, noticed that it lists a EquiDual tarrif - Does this mean a reduction for dual fuel???
I have both gas and electric from Ebico but don't know what tariff I am on.0 -

Thanks for all that Cardew. I agree that you can continually be chasing the cheapest supplier and could therefore be contstantly switching, which wouldn't be very practical. I had never switched before and thought very long and hard before taking the plunge. I was one of those sad people who thought it would all go wrong and that I was better off just staying put with BG. I suppose I just liked the simplicity of Ebico's pricing structure, it just seems so upfront with no hidden surprises. I have only been with them for a month, so will have to see how it goes. Just wish I had switched to them a year ago - would have been quids in then!
Sorry to hear about the Betamax VCR, would probably be worth something now on Ebay!Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -

The Equidual tarrif seems to be an invention of u Switch, it is not mentioned on the Ebico website.
Equipower and Equigas prices are the same to all their customers whether they take one or both fuels, or how they pay be it prepayment meter, quarterly bills or by direct debit. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
That's a shame, EquiDual sounds quite good lol0
