The new Sammy has an astonishing 5000:1 whereas this one has a relatively modest 1200:1. And IMO it's usually the poor contrast on LCD TVs that lets down the pic quality. Hmmmm...decision decisions.
I've got two Tevion/Medion LCD TVs one with 600 contrast & one with 800. The thing is, the picture is so good, especially if the source input is good that you don't notice any contrast problems. Take the Samsung 5000 contrast with a pinch of salt.Nice to save.0 -

I think that they fudge the figures on the Samsung somehow0 -
I have the medion 32in lcd hd with a 1000:1 when I connected the humax hd 2000 to it via freebie hdmi cable the bbc HD was unbelievable, nearly upgraded my sky...my tv sells on ebay now for £499.. So in 12months this tv will be £599
As long as the warrantys ok and you can replace it easily if you get a fault I can see no reason not to buy one at this price...Ive never dealt with returning a big item with aldi/lidl though so dont know of any hassle..0 -
Ok I fancy one of these
but will it be out date in 2 years time ?
Paying that sort of money you would expect at least 5 years
I currently have a freeview box and a 28 " toshiba w/s
So what kind of picture can I expect from the new aldi 40" ?

Just got the e-mail myself and £849 is a very good price. If I (a) needed a new tv and (b) had the money (!) I'd be giving this one a good look.
Dunno if it has it's own thread but yhey also have a HDMI compatible DVD player on offer at £40. It's Divx compatible too, which is kinda at odds with a 'HD' signal but more features are all good.
I might get one of these but I think that my Xbox 360 does the same job of upscaling a normal DVD. The picture on it watching DVDs certainly looks better than most other players I've seen.
Whatever, Aldi comes good. Some fab buys there for Money Savers!
E2A: Silly me didn't look down the page and see the DVD thread.0 -

You can't assure that any technology will be up to date in 2 years time in this day and age. I work in IT and 2 years may as well be a millenium in technology terms.
HDTV broadcasts have only just commenced and as far as I can see aren't prevalent enough to justify forking out on a new HDTV unless you have to.
At the moment a new Playstation 3 is likely to be £549 when it's launched, a year from now it will be a lot cheaper and more reliable. I reckon the same can be said all round for HDTV.0 -
well there is nothing wrong with my Toshiba, and I dont intend at this moment forking out for an hd box from Sky ...so basically what your saying is hang on !RedOnRed wrote:You can't assure that any technology will be up to date in 2 years time in this day and age. I've got a CRT Panasonic 100 refresh rate 28" flat screen TV which I got about 5 years or so ago and it's still very good.
From what i've heard, the new LCD HDTV's look great when displaying HDTV but if you watch normal TV on them they're no better if not worst then standard TV's.
I just think that until the majority of programmes are broadcast in HDTV there's no point in rushing out and getting one.0 -

That's the type of issue that puts me off the cheaper brands a bit.
Perhaps it shares a code with a well known brand. I suppose you've tried a few?0
